Zur Gattung Kurze Prosa ist eine große Anzahl sehr verschiedenartiger Texte zu zählen. Daher formuliert diese Arbeit, bevor sie einige exemplarische Interpretationen unternimmt, zwei heuristische Annahmen: Kurze Prosa ist die Antwort der Literatur auf die ‘herrschende Prosa’ des pressebestimmten Zeitalters. Als experimenteller nucleus moderner Literatur nutzt sie ihre Ähnlichkeit mit den Prosagattungen der Zeitung wie Bericht, Kommentar, Feuilleton, um spezifische Gegenentwürfe zur Vermittlung  von Bedeutendem zu formulieren. Insbesondere die Tendenz kurzer Prosatexte, zu Reihen mit diskreter Ordnung zusammenzutreten, führt zu einer Kontrafaktur des ‘Kosmos’ Zeitung. Kurze Prosa ist in vielen ihrer Realisationen zu verstehen als eine Wiederbelebung emblematischer Struktur und Intention. Die Dreiteilung des Emblems in inscriptio, pictura und subscriptio stiftet, übertragen auf moderne Prosatexte, als Strukturmodell sinnvolle Beziehungen zwischen den Textteilen. Darüber hinaus kann ‘emblematisch’ als eine aller Stofflichkeit der Texte übergeordnete literarische Gattungsintention kenntlich gemacht  werden. Gegenstand der Untersuchung sind in der Hauptsache Kurzprosatexte Peter  Altenbergs, Karl Kraus’ und Walter Benjamins. In weiteren Kapiteln werden neben theoretischen Fragen zur Erkenntnisfunktion des  Rückgriffes auf die Emblematik auch Text-Bild-Kompositionen des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts behandelt, in denen die emblematische Struktur als Grundmuster massenmedialer Vermittlungsweisen durchscheint.
