The Global Climate Crisis: What To Do About It

In ''Iwa Tales, by author Craig B. Smith, Kaimi Kanahele, a young boy living in Honolulu meets a mysterious ''Iwa (Frigate Bird) on the beach. Intrigued by the large bird''s peculiar behavior, the boy approaches the bird. He is surprised to find that the bird speaks to him in a series of guttural croaks and hissing sounds, strange, but perfectly understandable. The first tale told by the bird describes how the early Polynesians arrived in the Hawaiian Islands, guided by one of the ''Iwa''s ancestors.Later, back at home, Kaimi wonders if he really heard the bird speak, or was it his imagination, magnified by the wind rustling through the palm trees at the beach? On successive days, Kaimi again encounters the ''Iwa, who rails at Kaimi''s inattentiveness as he tells him more tales about the history of the islands. The second Tale recounts an ancient legend concerning a prince from the island of Kaua''i who came to O''ahu to perfect his surfing skills. He falls in love with a bird having supernatural powers and able to change herself into the form of a beautiful girl. When he breaks a promise, the girl dies and the prince is turned to stone. The ''Iwa uses this story to emphasize to Kaimi that he must promise to remember the ''Iwa''s tales.The third tale concerns Kamehameha, the king who united the islands. The ''Iwa tells Kaimi how the king narrowly escaped capture and death at the hands of his enemies by swimming to an underwater cave in the Mokulua Islands, not far from Kailua. The ''Iwa challenges Kaimi: "Can you be like Kamehameha and accomplish great deeds, help save the seas and preserve these islands?" Later, the underwater cave takes on great significance for Kaimi. The fourth tale describes the attack on Pearl Harbor from the perspective of the ''Iwa birds that viewed the ferocity of the bombing and feared for the invasion of the island. In the fifth tale, the ''Iwa tells the story of a family that settled on the island near Kailua and made their home a place of refuge for birds. They typified a generation that cared for the island and its precious resources. When war came, they had to leave their home, but were able to return later. The ''Iwa tells Kaimi of terrible things that are happening in the oceans, from plastics and debris that are killing sea turtles and birds, to rising sea levels and acidification that is killing coral, and urges him to do something about these problems. He predicts a bleak future for the islands unless the human residents change their ways and pay more attention to caring for the land and the sea.Although Kaimi went many times to the beach where he''d first met the ''Iwa, he never encountered the bird again.Yet, there is a sixth tale, when Kaimi accidentally discovers the underwater cave and suddenly realizes that the ''Iwa did have unique knowledge of the island. This and other mysterious events convince Kaimi of the wisdom of the bird''s stories, and he decides to devote himself to the future preservation of the Hawaiian Islands and the oceans around them.After graduating from high school, Kaimi went to the University of Hawai''i and earned a degree in biology. Kevin Hunter awakes one morning to find himself tied and beaten in a remote mountain cabin. Lying next to him is the dead body of CIA agent Robert Beske. Kevin manages to escape and then learns that simultaneously his wife Juliana had been kidnapped, but also managed to escape. He volunteers to help the CIA find Beske’s murderer. Earlier, Kevin and Juliana had sailed to Santa Barbara Island, where they discovered some stolen parts of a secret drone guidance system. By Kevin’s intervention, these were retrieved by the Coast Guard and marked the beginning of Kevin and Juliana’s ordeal. Kevin had met Juliana 12 years earlier while working on a project. They fell in love and were married. Their new life together was busy with Juliana’s work on climate change, Kevin’s travel on business to the Middle East, and time on their boat when they could get away. In Kuwait Kevin narrowly misses becoming a prisoner of the Iraq invasion forces when many of his colleagues become POWs and human shields. While on a trip to Washington, Kevin is invited by his CIA contact to attend a secret CIA training facility in Virginia. In his absence, another attempt is made to kidnap Juliana. Learning of this, Kevin undertakes surveillance of Saleh, a mysterious Saudi Arabian lawyer who may be behind the effort to steal secret information concerning America’s drone program. A further attempt is made on Kevin and Juliana during Kevin’s travels to Johnston Island in the Pacific. At this point Saleh disappears, after first deciding to double cross his Iranian clients and sell the secrets to the Chinese. Kevin’s surveillance leads to a possible link in Las Vegas, where Leila, Saleh’s mistress, has seduced an airman at Creech Airforce base where the drones are flown. She is also in an affair with an Iranian engineer working for an American aerospace company. Leila and the airman are arrested and as the FBI closes in, the Iranian commits suicide. Later the world is altered by the horror of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, where Kevin has a project. At Saleh’s suggestion, his Chinese contact attempts to recruit Juliana and is arrested by the FBI. Kevin narrowly misses a fatal attack by terrorists in Saudi Arabia when his travel plans change at the last minute. He promises Juliana, no more trips to the Middle East. The promise is quickly forgotten when he talks Juliana into a trip to Egypt. Leila has managed to escape from federal prison and returns to Egypt where she joins her brother and a group of Sinai Jihadists carry out terrorist attacks. Kevin continues to aid the CIA when one of his employees in Afghanistan reports on al Qaeda activities, and another travels to Iran to retrieve a flash drive containing information on Iranian drone research. At the CIA’s request, Kevin makes a final undercover trip to Egypt to identify Leila who is arrested by Egyptian authorities as a result. Following Kevin’s retirement, Juliana organizes a dinner for a small group of friends at Twenty-Two Ocean View, an elegant beach front restaurant in Newport Beach. After the dinner, Kevin and Juliana walk home along the boardwalk, where a suicide bomber on a bicycle detonates a charge with fatal consequences.

Counting the Days is the story of six prisoners of war imprisoned by both sides during the conflict the Japanese called the "Pacific War." As in all wars, the prisoners were civilians as well as military personnel. Two of the prisoners were captured on the second day of the war and spent the entire war in prison camps: Garth Dunn, a young Marine captured on Guam who faced a death rate in a Japanese prison 10 times that in battle; and Ensign Kazuo Sakamaki, who suffered the ignominy of being Japanese POW number 1. Simon and Lydia Peters were European expatriates living in the Philippines; the Japanese confiscated their house and belongings, imprisoned them, and eventually released them to a harrowing jungle existence caught between Philippine guerilla raids and Japanese counterattacks. Mitsuye Takahashi was a U.S. citizen of Japanese descent living in Malibu, California, who was imprisoned by the United States for the duration of the war, disrupting her life and separating her from all she owned. Masashi Itoh was a Japanese soldier who remained hidden in the jungles of Guam, held captive by his own conscience and beliefs until 1960, 15 years after the end of the war.
