<p>In many ways the 1980s was the 'Golden Age' of diesel locomotive-hauled trains on British Railways. By this period travel behind steam traction was a faint memory. However, many popular classes would carry on throughout the 1980s and this decade also saw many changes taking place in the infrastructure of the railways. The advent of diesel on Britain's railways at the end of the age of steam meant the introduction of many locomotive designs from a variety of manufacturers. Some were highly successful and generated an enthusiastic following that continues today. Diesel Memories is a superb collection of black-and-white photographs, supported by Roger Siviter's informative and well-researched captions. The book contains all the important locomotive classes from the Deltics, `Warships' and `Westerns', the Class 25s, 26s, 27s and 37s to the 50s and 47s and even the old DMUs. In addition to the locomotives, there is an important photographic record of locations which have changed almost beyond recognition and of the railway infrastructure, including stations, signal-boxes and semaphore signals which have now disappeared. This book will remind readers of a fascinating evolutionary period for Britain's railways.
