Billy was quiet for a moment, then asked, "When is my face going to turn black like yours?" "It's not ever going to turn black, Punkin." "Why not?" "It's just not, that's why. When God makes up his mind what color a flower's going to be, that's what color it is. And it's never going to change. We're God's little flowers, you and me, and he picked me for black and you for pink, which is what most folks call white." Neither spoke for a while, then Billy broke the silence. "Was your mama black like you?" "Yes, she was." "And your daddy?" "Yes." "And your brother?" "Yes." She anticipated and dreaded the next question. "Are you my mama?" Sookey spoke slowly and looked straight ahead. "If cutting your cord with a butcher knife and breathing air into your lungs with my own makes me your mama, then that's what I am." She took a deep breath. "If giving you breast milk from your very first drop to your last, and wiping your forehead with a cold cloth all night when you was sick with the fever makes me your mama, then that's what I am."

The Cove

This story is not an autobiography. It is a collection of stories about a boy's discoveries in the world of nature. The stories told in these essays could possibly have been experienced by any boy with an insatiable desire to learn about nature and its creatures. However, this particular boy had an incentive far beyond a child's normal curiosity about nature. These small adventures offered him temporary escape from a life of poverty. The Cove became more than just an escape; it became his haven. Nature and the Cove asked nothing of him but gave him answers to many questions.

About the Author Bud Simpson was born in Brewer, Maine during the Great Depression. He grew up with the Penobscot River in his backyard, Johnson Brook a quarter of a mile away from his front door, and lots of woods in between. This close proximity to the woods and waters of Maine instilled in him a great love of nature. His love of nature is still with him today. He writes a weekly column for the Logan Daily News in Logan, Ohio and an occasional nature column as well. Besides writing, he is also a photographer, sculptor, and an artist in several media.

This book features one of the author's favorite birds, The Great Blue Heron. He hopes you enjoy this intimate look into the life of a truly magnificent American bird. Most of these photos were taken by him in the beautiful Hocking Hills area of southeastern Ohio. This book is intended as a photographic essay concerning one bird species, the Great Blue Heron. It is not a technical piece by any means. My intent is to let these photographs speak for themselves as much as possible. I might interject my observations into its photographic narration at some points, but only as clarification or to point out an observation of my own pertaining to what these great birds have taught me about themselves. They were the teachers, I was the eager student. They still have much to teach me. I'll never live long enough to know it all. I was amazed to find that I had over 9,000 images of Great Blue Herons in my computer folders. I know I will run across some photographs later on and say to myself: I should have included this one, or that one. I still take more photos each time I go to my lake. I can't help myself. Who knows if the next photo will teach me something else about these aptly named birds. I'm almost afraid to check my picture files for all the other species I have photographed. If all goes well with this offering, I may do other books on other species in at some point in the future.
