These poems are my prayer “to create the totality of my loves into a living bridge for my progeny to cross.” The richness of these western lands, peoples and their culture are reflected each day in cliffs towering above our new home. Our senses are sharpened by their strangely beautiful spires and by the fragrances of our local flora, by ravens’ and quails’ cries, and by coyotes’ singing. The Navajo heritage is expressed in the woven testaments of their lives, in their rugs created from the natural colored wools of their sheep and with dye colors of desert plants. It is also in the native gems, the garnets, malachite, and jaspers they fashion into silver rings and necklaces. But above all, it is the love and care they have for all their children in their songs and prayers. The values their medicine men and women teach during healing meetings have allowed the Navajos to survive in our present culture. I also recognize that this country of red rocks has called out to people from around the world and resonates with something innate and beautiful in all our hearts. So I dedicate these poems as a small offering of tribute to all of us who have had the good fortune to come here.

Adele Seronde is a painter, poet and community activist. She has exhibited in galleries on the east coast, in southwest Arizona and in Italy over the last sixty years, as well as published poetry for both adults and schoolchildren. During the year 1968, answering the challenging anger of America's citizens at Martin Luther King's assassination, she helped organize a unifying citywide program: the Mayor of Boston's Neighborhood Art's Festival, to bring the imagination and beauty of the arts to help heal people.Besides writing or contributing to five books of poetry, Seronde has written two books in prose (2006): Our Sacred Garden: the Living Earth, concerning ways to protect and nurture our natural environment, and Pegasus: Wings on Fire in Education (still being edited), addressing today's crises in American education. She has also founded a national organization: Gardens for Humanity, to encourage and teach gardening in school, hospitals and caring centers in both urban and rural areas.This book of poetry is more personal. All My Loves and Deaths reveals a lifetime of deep appreciation for her own, and an extended family of friends and beloveds, both living and dead. Their enchanting customs, gestures, mannerisms, laughter and quirks are caught in momentary flashes, not as complete portraits but as spontaneous revelations.
