From the 1960s drawing assumed a prominent position in the practice of a rising generation of post-war artists in Germany and Austria. This publication examines works on paper by four artists still comparatively little known in the UK. While Georg Baselitz and Gerhard Richter, household names in German contemporary art, are well known for their large and commanding works, a quieter and more reflective strand is found in the work of Rudi Tröger (b. 1929), Karl Bohrmann (1928-1998) and Carl-Heinz Wegert (1926-2007). Small and intimate in scale, their drawings focus on the abstracted, minimalist figure, the studio interior and landscapes, through a sensitive use of line and a spare, self-effacing gesturalism. By contrast, the Austrian actionist Hermann Nitsch (1938-2022) presents visceral depictions of the human anatomy in his large lithographs, which come out of his notorious actionist performances. This publication celebrates a second major gift to the British Museum from the German collector Count Christian Duerckheim, whose first gift featured in Germany Divided: Baselitz and his generation, published by the British Museum Press in 2014.

The playful ease and subtle humor of Al Taylor's drawings made him an artist's artist par excellence. When he died of lung cancer at age 51 in 1999, he left a large body of work--of the constructions he thought of as three- dimensional drawings, made of broomsticks and wires and tin cans and linoleum and other clean-lined debris, with which he "drew" in the air; and then piles upon piles of drawings themselves, of which Charles Yoder has written that they are "softly nuanced, surely handled and ever changing." The illustrations here offer highlights from both his estate and private collections, including The Museum of Modern Art, as well as a few sculptural works.

Josef Albers' rigorous investigations into color have had a decisive effect on art in the twentieth century and beyond. His teaching posts at the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College and Yale enabled him to bequeath his theories to several generations of artists and designers, from Max Bill and Mark Rothko to Eva Hesse and Ray Johnson. Published for an exhibition at the Morgan library, and with an abundance of previously uncollected works, this volume unveils the full bounty of Albers' works on paper: lithographs, linocuts, woodcuts, screenprints and etchings. Since the prints lack the just-visible brushwork of Albers' paintings, allowing color to emerge without surface blemish, some have argued that they constitute a more effective illustration of his color theory.

Terry Winters’ prints explore an enormous range of themes, from botany and biology to math and information technology.
