This work explores everyday social practices, and how they influence who people are, what they become, the quality of their lives, the opportunities and possibilities open to them, and those they are denied. There is an emphasis on language and literacy components of social practices. The following questions are asked: How are language and literacy framed within different social practices?; How are social practices in turn shaped and framed by language and literacy?; what are the consequences for the lives and identities of individuals and groups?; How can we understand these relationships, and build on this understanding to develop critical forms of literacy and language awareness that enhance human dignity, freedom and social justice?

None but Our Words: Critical Literacy in Classroom and Community

None But Our Words describes the literacy projects in school and inner city communities that the author has generated over 25 years of teaching, since the Stepney Words affair when he was sacked for publishing an anthology of his East London school students' poems. Their self-organized strike for his reinstatement was the first example of 'cultural action' which had its source in the literacy work Searle was developing in the classroom.

A polemical but well-researched analysis of the policies which are cau sing unacceptable levels of exclusion in British primary and secondary schools, particularly of black children, from a well-known educational campaigner. The author provides a wealth of statistical information, together with many case studies of wrongly excluded children. He also describes the attacks made on him by the NASUWT and local education authority in Sheffield, when he instituted a no exclusion policy as a headteacher. The book argues that exclusions are symptomatic of a wider culture of social exclusion, and puts forward alternative policies for dealing with difficult students - policies based, among other things, on a recognition that feelings of exclusion often contribute to the problem behaviour of students, and that a key task of any school is to actively work for the inclusion of all its students.
