This catalogue of Greek coins sets out to achieve what has not been attempted before: namely, a listing with values of virtually every main type of Hellenic coinage. The average collector should be able to locate in this catalogue all the types he is likely to encounter, in one denomination or another, and the historical notes provide valuable background information. Complementing this comprehensive listing of Greek coins is a selection of contemporary Celtic coins, the designs of which are largely derived from Greek types. This first volume covers the Greek coins of Europe arranged in geographical order from Spain in the west to the Peloponnese and Crete. There are 3,395 coins listed and 1500 illustrations taken from coins in the British Museum, a table of ancient alphabets, 13 maps and an index.

It was during this time that I wrote my first book ROMAN COINS AND THEIR VALUES. H.A. Seaby's 1954 Roman catalogue was out of print and seriously in need of revision, so I took it upon myself to undertake the task in my spare time. The book was published by Seaby in 1964 and received immediate recognition as an invaluable aid to the beginner in the hobby of Roman coin collecting. In the same year it was awarded the Lhotka Memorial Prize by the Royal Numismatic Society in London. It has since been through four revised editions and I am currently preparing an entirely new 'Millennium Edition' which will be published in six volumes, the first three of which are already available.

The Byzantine Empire lasted for almost a thousand years after the fall of the Roma Empire in the West. The period covered by this catalogue is from the reign of Anastasius I (491-518) until the capture of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453. When this catalogue was first published in 1974 it was hailed as containing more information in a concise form than any other single volume on the Byzantine series. This new edition incorporates the research of the intervening years, new attributions and new coins that have been recognized. The later Palaeologan period has been completely revised by Simon Bendall, a noted authority on the period. Michael Dennis O'Hara has contributed a detailed Appendix on the gold forgeries of the 'Beirut' and allied schools that have caused collectors some concern. Over two and a quarter thousand coins in gold, silver and bronze are listed, valued and illustrated with more than 600 photographs, giving a virtual type catalogue of the Byzantine series. The Introduction discusses the types, mints, denominations, dates and inscriptions found on Byzantine coins and includes seven maps and a table of monograms.
