Although we know so much more about Philippine history, than was the case say ten or twenty years ago, the task of reconstructing and reinterpreting it in light of centuries of misinterpretations, distortions and omissions remains a formidable and overwhelming one. To compensate for this horrendous neglect of our history, we need to identify and rectify the imbalances in historical scholarship, to apply the best techniques, use the best perspectives not only of the discipline of history but also those of sister disciplines in the social sciences and humanities as well as access the voluminous historical data in archives and libraries in many parts of the world. It hardly need be stated that there is also a need to re-read the earlier historical presentations for many of them have served only to obscure the real contours of our development as a people. We have reached a stage in our historical development where the rescue of our culture is of utmost importance: we must make any aspect of our culture ever present and easy of access to see its assonance with (or significance in) our present life and to free it from the alienating forces that have prevented its self-appraisal. Obviously, any scholar who engages in the above process would also contribute to the affirmation of the Filipino identity and provide substance to the truism that history can be an instrument of liberation.

When American forces invaded the Ilocos by land and sea in November 1899, they touched off a classic anti-imperialist guerrilla war that was to last 18 months. They quickly occupied the towns but were never able to control the barrios, and in the mountains, Gen. Manuel Tinio of Nueva Ecija and Ilocano commanders like Blas and Juan Villamor, Estanislao Reyes and Father Gregorio Aglipay were able to maintain contact with their commander-in-chief, Emilio Aguinaldo, for more than a year.

William Henry Scott's book, Looking for the Hispanic Filipino and Other Essays in Philippine History, is practically a collection of essays that deals with various topics regarding the prehistory of the Philippines. The book is composed of eleven (11) essays each being either a study previously published in various journals or chapters of edited books. Each essay deals with specific themes but all have one common denominator: correcting errors and misconceptions that have been written in history books and being taught to every Filipino who has ever gone to school.Scott  utilized the documentations found in the Spanish archives and the very same resources that previous historians used and he was able to provide new perspectives on the issue of Philippine prehistory. Scott was likewise able to provide evidences that disproves various misconceptions about our pre-colonial past as well as provide new interpretations to specific "truths" that have long been accepted in the discussion of Philippine history.There is only one premise for the book: there is always the need to re-read the historical documents that historians have previously utilized to tell the story of the Filipino people and to pore over translated documents to arrive at new conclusions and interpretations. Historians often take for granted sources that have been utilized by other scholars, thinking that there is "nothing new to see in there" (as what Ambeth Ocampo was told when he tried to re-read Rizal's novels from the National Library. This philosophy and practice creates inaccuracies because sources that have been interpreted are not re-interpreted and validated using cross-references from other sources that may have potential links to the source in question. However, based from what Scott and Ocampo both discovered, there is always a "new story" in these old story books.

Looking for the Prehispanic Filipino and Other Essays in Philippine History

This book presents a sixteenth-century Philippine ethnography based on contemporaneous sources. It does not attempt to reconstruct that society by consideration of present Philippine societies, or of features believed to be common to all Austronesian peoples. Nor does it seek similarities with neighboring cultures in Southeast Asia, though the raw data presented should be of use to scholars who might wish to do so. Rather it seeks to answer the question: What did the Spaniards actually say about the Filipino people when they first met them? It is hoped that the answer to that question will permit Filipino readers today to pay a vicarious visit to the land of their ancestors four centuries ago. Part 1 describes Visayan culture in eight chapters on physical appearance, food and farming, trades and commerce, religion, literature and entertainment, natural science, social organization, and warfare. Part 2 surveys the rest of the archipelago from south to north.
