Although a goodly portion of the Albany County census of 1790 was burned in a 1911 fire, about half of the names for Albany County (just under 4,000) did survive. Professor Scott's compilation is a transcription of the rescued portion of the Albany County census and gives, first, the name of the head of household as it appears in the state census and, immediately after it, in brackets, the reading in the federal census-an arrangement of uncommon advantage to the genealogist.

Colonial newspapers are a prime source of genealogical data, and early New Haven, Connecticut newspapers, in particular, are rich in data on individuals who might not otherwise appear in the public records. This present work, a joint undertaking by Kenneth Scott and Rosanne Conway, contains abstracts of all items concerned with persons in New England mentioned in New Haven newspapers between 1755 and the outbreak of the Revolution, providing some 20,000 references to approximately 7,500 persons. Such findings are normally hard won, and the genealogist interested in early Connecticut has much to be grateful for. 
Particularly valuable for historical and genealogical research are lists of addressees of unclaimed letters left in the post offices of New Haven, New London, Hartford, and Norwalk; and lists of members elected to the General Assembly of Connecticut, of clergymen of that colony, of owners of land grants, of graduates of colleges, especially Yale, of members of committees of correspondence and inspection, and committees for accepting donations for the relief of Boston. 
News events abstracted include shipwrecks, fires, murders, brawls, riots, jailbreaks, and deaths from drowning, lightning, or natural causes. Marriages, usually of prominent persons, are also covered. Advertisements concerned with auctions, real estate, deserters, runaway apprentices, servants and slaves, eloping wives, strayed or stolen livestock, offers of goods or services, and the appointment of commissioners to settle the estates of the recently deceased generally contain important information and are also abstracted in this work.

Genealogical Data from Colonial New Haven Newspapers

The recording of ships' passenger lists was not required by law until 1819, and prior to that date only scattered lists of immigrants are thought to exist--until now, that is, for we have in this publication a record of thousands of British immigrants who arrived in the United States mainly between 1790 and 1812 and who had not yet been naturalized, and concerning whom few other records can be found. This is an altogether new and invaluable list of immigrants, founded upon a major record source few genealogists are aware of--the returns of aliens residing in the United States during the War of 1812. As of July 1812 British aliens in the United States were required to submit a report of "the persons composing their families, the places of their residence and their occupations or pursuits." These reports, or returns of the reports, upon which this work is based, normally give the name of the alien, aged fourteen or more, years of residence in the United States, number of persons in the family, place of residence, and occupation. In this compilation the aliens are listed in alphabetical order under their respective states, with accompanying data incorporated in the listing. In this manner as many as 12,000 or more aliens are identified, all of whom, for the reader's convenience, are again cited in the index.

Of all the records in the public domain no single research group presents such an obstacle to the researcher as naturalization records. Unlike other public records they are not consolidated in a convenient archive, but are housed instead in a bewildering number of local and municipal repositories--courts, city archives, and record centers--where they remain the least accessible of genealogical records. This is extremely unfortunate because they are practically without equal in genealogical value. In this new work, however, Kenneth Scott has made a magnificent start in shaping these records into accessible form, herein presenting a comprehensive body of abstracts from the sprawling mass of New York naturalization records for the period 1792 to 1840. The naturalizations and declarations of intention abstracted in this volume--some 10,000 of them--are arranged in more or less chronological order by courts and jurisdiction. Information given in the original documents varies considerably and is so reflected in the abstracts. The earlier records usually include the name of the petitioner (the alien), his country of origin, the name of the person who recommended him, and his place of residence. The later records usually indicate for each petitioner his name, place of residence, age, place of birth, port and approximate date of arrival in America, his occupation, the names and ages of his wife and children, and various other particulars--all grist for the genealogists' mill. We are thus delighted to bring this important work under our imprint.
