If everybody were to play first violin, we could not have an orchestra. Therefore respect each musician in his own place. There is no end to learning. Originally published in1850, Advice to Young Musicians: Musical Rules for Home and in Life offered composer Robert Schumann’s (1810–56) combination of practical advice and poetic words of wisdom for young people beginning their musical education. Recognizing the continued resonance of Schumann’s words, world-renowned cellist Steven Isserlis, himself a writer of children’s books and many articles for young musicians, set out to rescue the work from history. The year 1840 proved a momentous one for Robert Schumann: after an interval of twelve years, he resumed writing songs, producing some 150 vocal compositions within the year; and in September, after a long and stormy courtship, he married his beloved Clara Wieck. During this period, Schumann’s biographers represent him as being “caught in a tempest of song,” transfiguring the emotions aroused by his love for Clara into a splendid outpouring of sublime music for voice and piano. Much of that music is reproduced in this collection — comprising over 100 of Schumann’s greatest lieder. This original compilation features three superb pieces for piano and orchestra by one of the key composers and pianists of the Romantic era. Composers from Brahms to Grieg have been influenced by Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 54. The composer's wife Clara was the solo pianist at the work's 1846 debut, under the direction of Ferdinand Hiller, to whom the work was dedicated. The Concerto in A Minor was the only piano concerto that Schumann completed in his tragically brief life.
