Painter Philip Guston's return to figuration in the late 1960s was plotted and rehearsed in his drawing practice, in which he veered between what he referred to as "pure drawing" (abstract) and figurative drawing (a shoe, a chair, a nail, an open book, a hooded head). As he groped his way into this strange and clunky vocabulary, Guston discovered an incredible world awaiting him, and realized, as he put it, that "I wanted to tell stories!" Guston's drawing was also a vehicle for collaboration--with poets such as Clark Coolidge and Bill Berkson--and for satire--the Poor Richard series. His draftsmanship betrays such early influences as the cartoons of Frink and George Herriman, perhaps instances of the "impure" art that flooded back into his practice after he abandoned abstraction. With a selection of about 100 drawings, mostly from the artist's estate, Philip Guston: Works on Paper tracks the evolution of this major American artist's drawing from the 1940s to 1980.

Today revered as one of Europe's master painters, Belgian artist Raoul De Keyser (born 1930) first came to public attention in the mid-1960s as a member of the Nieuwe Visie ("New Vision") group, alongside Roger Raveel, Etienne Elias and Reinier Lucassen-a fraternity of painters interested in reanimating earlier strains of European abstraction. The German artist Rosemarie Trockel (born 1952) adapts a variety of media to address contentious matters of gender. Trockel is perhaps best known for her "knit" canvases of the mid-1980s, in which lengths of knitted wool patterned with political and consumer motifs such as the hammer and sickle or the Playboy bunny were hung on stretchers to resemble conventional paintings. In a gently humorous work from 1988, Trockel fitted a steel cube with six hot plates, in a simultaneous nod to the pervasive masculinity of Minimalism and the feminine domain of cooking. Regardless of media, Trockel begins each new work with ink, charcoal, pencil, collaged, or computer drawings. These serve as studies, charting her observations and methods, and also constitute an independent body of work. This publication presents a selection of graphic prints and a series of drawings and collages made especially for this book, along with designs for the book itself.

Mitch Epstein (born 1952) is among America's finest contemporary photographers. Two of the most powerful series upon which his reputation rests are Recreation (1973-1988) and American Power (2003), sequences that attempt to make fundamental statements about the U.S. by scrutinizing how its citizens spend their leisure and how its energy industry operates.
