One of the most imaginative and fascinating artists of eighteenth-century France, Edme Bouchardon (1698–1762) was instrumental in the transition from Rococo to Neoclassicism and in the artistic rediscovery of classical antiquity. La chancellerie d’Orléans : peu d’hôtels particuliers parisiens ont fait couler autant d’encre que ce bijou du début du XVIIIe siècle, redécoré dans les années 1760 par l’architecte Charles De Wailly pour le marquis de Voyer, l’un des plus grands collectionneurs et mécènes de son temps. Malgré de vives polémiques, les décors de cet hôtel voisin du Palais Royal furent démontés pièce par pièce en 1923 pour faciliter l’agrandissement de la Banque de France.
