Dutch photographer Hellen van Meene was herself barely out of girlhood when she began to photograph adolescent girls whom she knew, or found, in her home town of Alkmaar in the north of Holland. Invited to photograph in Japan in 2000, she found that while she could not communicate directly with her subjects, her instincts regarding the universality of adolescent experience, and her visual and stylistic approach to it, were translatable. In her square-format, medium-focal-length pictures of unnamed girls, van Meene strives to compose "photographs of adolescent situations and attitudes, which represent the type of 'normality' we don't usually share with others, but keep to ourselves."

This book presents images taken in Brazil's Amazon Basin, in a fishing village on the island of Visio and among the rubber-trappers along the river Madeira. Focusing on a balance between composing to bring out certain aspects in her subjects and capturing the natural relationships of people in their own surroundings, Lockhart's photographs explore an interesting mixture of narrative and documentary. Essays by Timothy Martin and Karel Schampers look at the photos in the context of her previous work and the anthropological significance of her working methods.

Dana Lixenberg's photographs, like those of Cartier-Bresson, somehow find a subject's deepest reality. Her portraits have broken through the well-tended exteriors of celebrities like Whitney Houston and Sean Penn as well as the hardened visages of Watts gang members. Now, with this book, Lixenberg finds the dignity in a group of people in Jeffersonville, Indiana. From 1997 to 2004, Lixenberg regularly visited the town to photograph homeless people who had found temporary shelters through Haven House Services. Characteristically, though, she does not confront us with spectacular, dramatic photos of the down and out, but discovers families put out on the street because they can no longer afford rent, single mothers who cannot support their children, and men who have been injured on the job without benefit of health insurance. Lixenberg's clear-headed and empathetic vision comes through in this series of portraits of people who have only just fallen through the cracks.
