Concerning his penchant for difficult or vulgar subject matter, San Francisco-born painter Peter Saul has stated, "Putting crime, war, sex, distortion and low class stuff into the picture is a way to take the decoration out of the picture--literally remove it from the dining room because no one is going to drink orange juice in the same room with it." Saul fuses his MAD Magazine-inspired humor with a Surrealist painting style to create difficult, funny and trenchant works--what Robert Storr, who has penned an essay for this volume, refers to as "sick jokes." Presaging Paul McCarthy and Mike Kelley and exerting noticeable influence on artists such as Barry McGee and Ed Templeton, Saul's oeuvre is long overdue for deeper examination and this comprehensive publication provides the first complete overview of his work over the past five decades--from his epic historical canvases to his homage to Thomas Hart Benton, his lampoons of art world sacred cows and works evidencing his particular take on the existential dilemmas of the aging American male. One third of the artist collective Paper Rad and the Creative Director of Fox's forthcoming late night animation block ADHD, Ben Jones (born 1977) makes work that harks back to the Saturday morning cartoons and video games of the 1980s. Jones' previous book, New Painting and Drawing, quickly sold out, making Men's Group: The Video the only currently available collection of his work. The book's theme is maleness; it includes the last five years of the artist's paintings, comics, drawings, products and videos, and is published on the occasion of the artist's solo exhibition, The Video, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, November 3, 2012-February 24, 2013. Also included is a series of texts about manhood commissioned from men the artist admires, including artists Peter Saul, Gary Panter and Joe Bradley, writers Keith McCulloch and Byron Coley and gallerist Phil Grauer, with a rebuttal by Nicole Rudick. Topping it all off are two lengthy interviews with Jones conducted by Dan Nadel and David Kramer. All of this work is showcased in an innovative format--multiple paper sizes and stocks bound together with a spiral wire and wrapped between thick chipboard covers.Ben Jones has exhibited or performed at museums and galleries including Deitch Projects, New York (solo), Foxy Production, New York, Loyal Galleri, Malmo (solo), The Modern, Fort Worth (solo), The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Tate Britain, London. »STONED AGIN«»Better than de Kooning«, this title quoted for a group exhibition sounds like a terrible genre joke, because »nobody can paint better than de Kooning«, so it is an ideal title for a group show exhibition. Peter Saul paints during the mid-1970s a series of pictures of women that parodies the »Woman«-pictures (1950–53) of Willem de Kooning. He meticulously imitates the brush strokes and the impasto in a stylistic mix of Pointillism and Graffiti Art, turns up the colour regulator, and allows the abstract-expressionist painting and the women themselves to blend in a »Daliesque« manner, like soft ice cream (see the text »Un Autre Monde« by Marcus Weber and »Ice Creams, Atom Bomb, I-Screens, Data Bomb« by Esther Leslie in this book). Long before Bad Painting became a central concern of contemporary art, San Francisco born painter Peter Saul (b. 1934) deliberately offended good taste. Employing a crossover of Pop Art, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, San Francisco funk and cartoon culture of the 1960s, Saul addressed the pressing political and social topics of his time. Vietnam, Reagan, protests, sex, drugs and the American dream clash in paintings rendered in screaming Day-Glo colors. Returning to San Francisco from Europe in 1956, Saul became a major figure in the 1960s and 1970s before moving to Austin, Texas, in 1980. His early work from the 1960s, recently reembraced by young curators and artists in the United States and Europe, has led to this first solo exhibition in Germany at the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt (2017). The vividly illustrated softcover catalog captures Saul s vision of this tumultuous time in over 100 color reproductions.
