From the beginning of her literary career, May Sarton showed the rare strength of character and the sense of discipline which enabled her to develop her talent and her art to full maturity. Always she kept before her the examples of her father, the great historian of science George Sarton, and of her mother, the artist and designer Eleanor Mabel Sarton; their devotion and passionate commitment to their respective fields of endeavor shaped her own. In all of her literary works - poems, novels, memoirs, essays - are evident her desire to be worthy of her gift, in their eyes; and her will to be worthy.
