500,000 Years in the Life of a River.  The longest river in England, the Thames, has witnessed the entire history of a country and its capital. The Story of the Thames looks at history from the river’s perspective, investigating how the life of the nation has affected the river and, in turn, how the river has been viewed by those who live along its length. In doing so it spans 500,000 years (longer than human history) and extends from source to mouth.  The Thames is often taken for granted. People assume that it is simply there, flowing passively through the human world, unchanging. That is not the case. The river has changed both physically, initially due to natural causes and latterly as a result of human intervention, and in how it is used. It has been viewed in very different ways in response to the needs and expectations of society at different times.  Beginning with geology and the ancient past, this book focuses on the social and economic changes exemplified in the life of the river, as well as touching on episodes of national and political history in which it was involved. Andrew Sargent explores the ritual deposit of metalwork in the river in the Bronze Age, the working river of the Middle Ages and post-medieval period, the development of leisure (e.g. Three Men in a Boat), the river in wartime, and modern environmental conservation.

<p>John Gay was one of the most respected photographers of the mid-20th century but, unlike that of some of his contemporaries, his work is now largely overlooked. This important book, which includes 300 evocative photographs from the large collection of his work held by the National Monuments Record, marks the centenary of his birth in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1909 and coincides with two major exhibitions of his work being held in London.  Gay's work is wide-ranging yet returns to a number of key themes - animals and children, informal shots of ordinary people, rural life, modern architecture, and London, especially his beloved Highgate and Hampstead, and characteristically uses light and shade to great effect. The insignificant object held a strong fascination for him and his gift for being unobtrusive imbues many of his images with a unique poignancy.</p>

East Anglia is an area of England renowned for its wide horizons, vast skies and extensive areas of wetland  a place where the land, sea and sky are beautifully intermingled. Hallam Ashley, a talented professional photographer, was drawn to this unique landscape and the people who lived and worked there and his wonderful documentary photography, dating mostly from the 1940s to the 1960s, is featured in this new book. Traditional crafts and industries were under threat in this period of rapid industrialisation and social change so his stunning images are also important historical documents of a fast-fading way of life. The 140 black-and-white photographs in the book are only a small selection from the archive of Hallam Ashley’s photography held by the National Monuments Record (NMR) in Swindon and they range from a flat-capped miller carefully dressing an ancient millstone and a flint-knapper fashioning gun-flints to a small boy admiring a farrier’s work and a busy repair shop for wooden carousel horses. Complemented with a personal biography by Hallam Ashley’s daughter and an informative introduction by the author, this book will appeal to anyone with an interest in photography, social history and the heritage of East Anglia.

Lichfield and the Lands of St Chad: Creating Community in Early Medieval Mercia (19) (Studies in Regional and Local History)

<p><div>This book focuses on the period from the seventh to eleventh centuries that witnessed the rise and fall of Mercia, the great Midland kingdom, and, later, the formation of England. Specifically, it explores the relationship between the bishops of Lichfield<br /> and the multiple communities of their diocese. Andrew Sargent tackles the challenge posed by the evidential 'hole' at the heart of Mercia by synthesising different kinds of evidence--archaeological, textual, topographical, and toponymical--to reconstruct the landscapes inhabited by these communities, which intersected at cathedrals, minsters, and other less formal meeting-places. Most such communities were engaged in the construction of hierarchies, and Sargent assigns spiritual lordship a dominant role in this. Tracing the interconnections of these communities, he focuses on the development of the Church of Lichfield, an extensive episcopal community situated within a dynamic mesh of institutions and groups within and beyond the diocese, from the royal court to the smallest township. The regional elite combined spiritual and secular forms of lordship to advance and entrench their mutual interests, and the entanglement of royal and episcopal governance is one of the key focuses of Andrew Sargent's outstanding new research. How the bishops shaped and promoted spiritual discourse to establish their own authority within society is key. This is traced through meagre textual sources which hint at the bishops' involvement in the wider flow of ecclesiastical politics in Britain, and through the archaeological and landscape evidence for churches and minsters held not only by bishops, but also by kings and aristocrats within the diocese.</div></p>
