A great book about the most interesting country in the twentieth century, a century that could've indeed been the German century had different decisions been made by certain individuals. The pictures are great, but the narrative is even better. Good non-academic books about German history that are not just about the National Socialists or the DDR are hard to come by; this book is great because it gives a well-written summary of the whole course of modern German history: the angsty, doomed German Empire, the chaotic, decadent Weimar Republic, the National Socialist Third Reich, the divided Cold War Germany, and the story of the miraculous reunification. A must buy for any fans of German history.
