Viewy women who gather for artistic, literary, intellectual and witty exchanges. Critics have used the term to refer to learned, and thus in their minds, unfeminine and pretentious women. The origin of the term is in dispute but was evidently first used in the 1750s to refer to women and men in London who gathered for conversation; one of the people wore blue worsted instead of black silk stockings. The women who attended were first derisively called bluestockings and Blue Stocking Ladies and later Bluestockings and Blues. The terms were thus first used to denote informal or homely dress and then to refer to intellectual, literary, or learned women. To "wear your blues" became a metaphor for evenings of intellectual and witty conversation. As the term bluestocking became associated with the women who held salons and who put their energies and emotions into their work with each other, it became a term of abuse, with connotations of snob and misfit. The bluestockings, excluded from politics, law, education and employment because they were female, formed an alternative, knowledgeable, supportive, competent and intellectually self-sufficient group. There are many bluestockings today, learning, reading, writing, and exchanging ideas in women's groups.

In 1853, Paulina Wright Davis, editor of a women's periodical, called the women's movement the greatest feat in the entire history of public opinion. This collection contains critical works from six radical periodicals of the 1850s. The editors and many of the contributors to the newspapers (including Amelia Bloomer, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Frances D.Gage and many others who should be well known writers and activists) called themsleves strong-minded women; today they would be called radical feminists. The introductions and excerpts indicate the writers' independence of men's definitions, and the women's concern with such topics as the damaging effects of men's accounts of history, men's battering of women, women's economic poverty and restrictions on women's freedom including unhealthy fashion norms and requirements.

What does it take to build communities to stand up to injustice and create social change? How do we work together to transform, without reproducing, systems of violence and oppression?In an age when feminism has become increasingly mainstream, noted feminist scholar and activist Ann Russo asks feminists to consider the ways that our own behavior might contribute to the interlocking systems of oppression that we aim to dismantle. 
Feminist Accountability offers an intersectional analysis of three main areas of feminism in practice: anti-racist work, community accountability and transformative justice, and US-based work in and about violence in the global south. Russo explores accountability as a set of frameworks and practices for community- and movement-building against oppression and violence. Rather than evading the ways that we are implicated, complicit, or actively engaged in harm, Russo shows us how we might cultivate accountability so that we can contribute to the feminist work of transforming oppression and violence. 
Among many others, Russo brings up the example of the most prominent and funded feminist and LGBT antiviolence organizations, which have become mainstream in social service, advocacy, and policy reform projects. This means they often approach violence through a social service and criminal legal lens that understands violence as an individual and interpersonal issue, rather than a social and political one. As a result, they ally with, rather than significantly challenge, the state institutions, policies, and systems that underlie and contribute to endemic violence. 
Grounded in theories, analyses, and politics developed by feminists of color and transnational feminists of the global south, with her own thirty plus years of participation in community building, organizing, and activism, Russo provides insider expertise and critical reflection on leveraging frameworks of accountability to upend inequitable divides and the culture that supports them.
