This beautiful book, illustrated throughout with black and white photos, follows the RGS as it struggled to stay afloat during the Great Depression. Details the use of small, hand-me-down locomotives which became the famous "Galloping Goose" between Ridgway and Durango, the ominipresent menace of floods and rockslides, fire and blizzard, as well as life in the mines that supported the railroad. This superb mile-by-mile photographic study takes you through the last years of the RGS in Rico down past the tumbling Dolores River. The book also covers the A. A. Rust logging railroad, newspaper articles that flesh out the struggles with derailments and floods, and the efforts of Elizabeth (Betty) Pellet to persuade the federal government to keep the RGS operating during World War II. With maps, line drawings (by Mike Blazek), gradient profiles, etc. 480 pages.

RGS Story Volume 8 contains pictures from World War II until the abandonment. Leaving Dolores, the reader is taken Lost Cañon to Mancos, and the lumber camp at Glencoe. Station facilities are shown on maps and drawings, with accompanying photographs. After Mancos, the RGS proceeded up the 2.5-percent grade toward Cima summit. 416 pages, with 280 black-and-white pictures and 55 full-color views.

The D&RG chose this site for a town because of the availability of coal. Smelters sprang into existence almost overnight in the fledgling town and mass quantities of raw ore no longer needed to be shipped to Denver or Pueblo. This book illustrates Durango's development year-by-year as the town progressed and the D&RG upgraded its railroad facilities. Once Otto Mears' Rio Grande Southern arrived on the scene in 1890, additional revenue created a boom as travelers ate, drank and bedded down, as well as shopped in Durango. This growing town was an interchange point between two narrow-gauge railroads and the history of the RGS becomes inseparably entwined at Durango with that of the D&RG--which controlled the RGS throughout most of its existence.
