Smoke jumpers are brave men and women who parachute into remote areas to save the forest from fires. Tractors are important in fighting fires. They are used to bulldoze trees and to plow fire lanes. In this story, the smoke jumpers need a small tractor that can be parachuted from an airplane to help them. Terry is just the right sized tractor for the job. Terry learns that fighting forest fires is the hardest work he has ever done. He also finds that he must overcome fear to get the job done. Terry and the smoke jumpers become trapped as the fire burns out of control. Will Terry's friend, Ellie the Eagle, and the "Water Bomber" come in time to save them?

Terry is a proud little tractor. He works hard and tries to be the best at everything he does. He takes on a new job. In the past the job has been done by an elephant. Terry is boastful that he can do the job better than the elephant. Terry and the elephant have a contest to see which can do the job better. Terry is best at the first task. His bragging hurts the elephant's feelings. Then, the elephant proves to be better at the second task. They learn that each has certain skills, but may not be good at other things. A friendly monkey helps the two contestants become friends. He also teaches them the importance of encouraging one another to do a good job.

The critters, led by Randy Raccoon, have come up with a wacky plan to drive the invaders away by stealing a train. This plan goes awry and results in a major catastrophe.
