Personal accounts are preeminent. Here we learn about life in the Army of Northern Virginia through young Randolph H. McKim's diaries. Randolph H. McKim was a first lieutenant and aide de camp in the 3rd Brigade, Johnston's Division, of the Army of Northern Virginia. Although McKim served first as a Confederate soldier, he later went into full time chaplaincy since he had studied for the Christian ministry before the war and because of the great need for chaplains. He eventually became Chaplain of the 2nd Virginia Cavalry. As an alternative to giving histories of campaigns, McKim gives his own experience as a soldier and chaplain. He wrote in this manner, "That I may thereby contribute in some small degree to a better understanding of the spirit of the epoch." His goal was to present the Confederate soldier's "purity of motive and his heroic constancy in danger and adversity." After the war, he was a "low church" minister in the Protestant Episcopal Church and resolute in his stand for orthodox theology.

Lizzie Carey Daniel was a teenager during the War Between the States, and as was the custom of young girls of her time, she kept a scrapbook. This is an assortment of her clippings about major players on the stage of the Southern Confederacy along with anecdotes, poems, and songs with a Confederate theme. She presented her “scraps” for publication in 1893 for the benefit of the Memorial Bazaar, held in Richmond, April 11, 1893.  There have been many re-prints of this book. This one is a unique edition with many extras such as a photograph of the author Lizzie Cary Daniel in addition to research on her family genealogy, and editorial remarks on the background of some of the poems and songs. Lizzie Cary Daniel, who was  born in 1848 and who died in1915, was a refined and cultured daughter of an old Virginia family, the Carys. Like most Virginia ladies of her time, her burning desire was that the heroic gallantry, valor, and sacrifice made by the sons of the “Old Dominion”  and indeed the soldiers of ALL of the Confederate States of America not pass into oblivion, for history never saw such men, and never shall again.  This enhanced edition has been completely re-typeset by a real person anotated by an academic historian.

John A. Marshall first published this book in 1869. It documents the arrest and incarceration without habeas corpus or trial of Northern judges, Congressmen, ministers, and even women, and exposes Lincoln's utter disregard for the Constitution and the rights of the people of both North and South. Unlike other re-prints of this book, this edition has been completely re-typeset by a real person, thus avoiding the addition of mistakes by optical character recognition software. The editor has taken nothing from Mr. Marshall's work, but added footnotes and clarifications of Latin legal terms and other terms that might not be easily understood by the modern reader, making for a smoother and more enjoyable reading experience.

She also defines his work with the Confederacy and his fact-finding trips to Mexico after the War Between the States seeking the possibility of the colonization of “A New Virginia.” At last the family is united in Virginia when Matthew Fontaine Maury accepted a teaching post at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington.

This book is a novel based on the capture and execution of "the boy hero of the Confederacy," Sam Davis of Tennessee. Invading Federal Troops of Grenville Dodge's Seventh Kansas "Jayhawk-ers" captured Davis, a member of the elite "Coleman Scouts" near Pulaski, Tennessee, and found in his boots and in his saddle bags information as to the strength of the Federal forces in Tennessee, their movements, and descriptions of the works at Nashville and other points. Davis would not reveal the source of the intelligence, and the capital punishment of hanging was meted out.
