The epic story of the early Welsh Mormons was virtually unknown until Ron Dennis personally mastered nineteenthcentury Welsh a major challenge even for a gifted linguist. After writing landmark books on Welsh immigration and literature, he focused for a dozen years on producing facsimile translations, or reproductions of early Welsh missionary texts and volumes of official Welsh Mormon periodicals produced during the great harvest of converts from that land. Virtually alone in this field of study, Dennis continues to work to preserve the full story of how the early preaching of the restored gospel inspired both fiery debate and heroic sacrifice among the people of Wales. This volume, which focuses on documents published in 1850, is another important chapter in this saga, part of Dennis s continuing efforts to translate all early Welsh Mormon literature.

The fifty-three issues of Udgorn Seion (Zion's Trumpet) published during 1853 served to keep Latter-day Saints all over Wales abreast of the latest directon and information from their leaders in Merthyr Tydfil and the newly announced practice of polygamy in the Church. They could read translated minutes of conferences held in Salt Lake City; instructions about emigrating; letters from those who had already left Wales for America; answers to their doctrinal questions; poetry composed especially for the periodical; and even bits of humor and wisdom sprinkled throughout. Today's reader of the facsimile translation of this volume can gain insights into the Mormon movement in mid-nineteenth-century Wales and a clearer understanding of the challenges the converts faced in living their new religion.

During 1856 and 1857, fifty-two issues of Udgorn Seion (Zions Trumpet) were published to deliver guidance and information to the Latter-Day Saints all over Wales from their leaders in Swansea. Emigration was the principal focus of the first few 1856 issues. Today these publications give us a glimpse into the lives of the Welsh Saints, five hundred of whom set sail on the S. Curling in April of that year. Half of this group then crossed the plains with the Edward Bunker handcart company. 
Daniel Daniels, the new editor of the periodical, was pleased to publish periodic reports from his predecessor Dan Jones about the emigration. During his second year as editor of Zion's Trumpet, a worried Daniels also published reports about Colonel Albert Sidney Johnston's Utah Expedition, which was advancing toward Salt Lake City, where his wife and children lived.
 Continuing the facsimile translation format of the previous eight volumes, translator and editor Ronald D. Dennis maintains the format and character of the original Welsch publication, giving readers a fascinating look into this little-known period of Church history. After thirty-five years of teaching Welsh and Portuguese at Brigham Young University, Ronald D. Dennis is taking advantage of his retirement years to translate the remaining extant volumes of Zion's Trumpet. During his three decades at Brigham Young University, Professor Dennis amassed an extensive collection of biographies, journals, and pictures of the early Welsh Latter-day Saints.
