<p>Muchos años de paz han alejado a Cartagena de preocupaciones bélicas. Los fuertes son un pintoresco rezago de otros tiempos. Pero para los cartageneros de antaño, que vivieron durante tres siglos al abrigo de estructuras de piedra, frías y económicamente pensadas para disuadir al enemigo, las defensas de la ciudad eran algo más que un adorno. Gobernadores y comerciantes, monjes y artesanos sabían muy bien que murallas y fuertes bien diseñados, bien hechos, bien artillados, bien pertrechados y bien defendidos eran la protección de honra y bienes, y de la vida misma. De la preocupación de los ingenieros militares y profesionales de las armas participaban ciudadanos de todas las castas, y en particular los más ricos, que en parte por ello, contribuyeron a sufragar, de su peculio, gastos de construcciones y reparaciones. Las fortificaciones de Cartagena fueron producto elaborado del temor, real e imaginario, a velas hostiles allende un horizonte aterradoramente próximo. </p>
<p> Estas páginas se inspiran en el deseo de explicar los empeños de quienes, por razones imperiales o lugareñas, analizaron y resolvieron las debilidades de la plaza y pegaron sin desmayo piedra sobre piedra hasta subsanarlas. No se trata, por lo tanto, de descripciones detalladas de fuertes y murallas sino de examinar las ideas estratégicas y tácticas que les dieron vida, y, por supuesto, de contar algo de su historia y de la historia de la ciudad, desde su fundación en 1533 hasta la Independencia en 1821.</p>

The rich often helped defray costs of construction and repair. The fortifications of Cartagena stemmed from fear, real and imagined, of hostile sails on a menacingly close horizon. This book tells about the efforts of men who driven by local and imperial interests studied the city's military weakness and attempted, stone by stone, to correct them. Its purpose is to asses the strategic ideas that gave birth to forts and ramparts and to chronicle events connected with their planning, building, and, of course, military history. The book contains no detailed descriptions of each bastion which might clutter reading although in the narrative much is told about the city itself and about how it evolved from its founding in 1533 to Independence in 1821.
