The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) was started in 1933 as one of the New Deal make-work programs, to employ jobless architects, draftspeople, and photographers. Its purpose is to document the nation’s architectural heritage, especially those buildings that are in danger of ruin or deliberate destruction. Today, the HABS is part of the National Park Service and its repository is in the Library of Congress, much of which is available online at loc.gov. Of the tens of thousands HABS buildings, I found 44 Frank Lloyd Wright designs that have been digitized. Each HABS survey includes photographs and/or drawings and/or a report. I’ve included here what the Library of Congress had–sometimes all three, sometimes two of the three, and sometimes just one. There might be a single photo or drawing, or, such as in the case of Florida Southern College (in volume two), over a hundred. While all of the documents in these books are on the Library of Congress website, they’re inconvenient to access. It’s time consuming to download the drawings as PDFs, which is what you have to do if you want to see their detail. The reports are separate PDFs, too. But I’ve done all that for you, and even turned the drawings on their side so that they fill the page. None of the text in these books other than the introduction is from me. The photo captions are verbatim from the Library of Congress, and all of the documents are shown without alteration, except that I adjusted the brightness and contrast of a few of the photos and converted the few color photos to B&amp;W. No photos were cropped or straightened, and I’ve retained the negative edges. A few reports that have only one page that says “Photographs” or “Drawings” have been left out, as they contain no useful information. Dorothea Lange was perhaps the best-known photographer working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA), mostly because of her iconic photograph Migrant Mother. But she did a lot of other fine work, too, as this book demonstrates. The Library of Congress has about 3800 Lange FSA photographs, of which 499 are high-quality scans. This book’s 500 photographs include those plus one of the others to make an even 500. They were taken between 1937 and 1939.

Ben Shahn is best known as a graphic artist and painter, but in his thirties he was a photographer for the US Farm Security Administration (FSA), along with Dorothea Lange, Arthur Rothstein, and others. This book contains 400 of his most compelling FSA photographs, along with the original captions from the Library of Congress.From the author's note in the book:The Library of Congress has about 1600 Ben Shahn FSA photographs. I chose the 400 for this book based on two criteria: (1) the availability of high-quality scans on the LoC website, and (2) compelling pictures of people (see quote at the top of the next page). TIFF files were downloaded using software written by me, processed in Adobe Lightroom, and formed into a book by another application written by me called PhotoMag (available for free on my website).I have a collection of thousands of FSA and OWI photographs, by Dorothea Lange, Esther Bubley, Andreas Feininger, Arthur Rothstein, John Collier, and others, in addition to Ben Shahn, and I've set them up for viewing as a long-running slideshow on a wall-mounted "photo frame." As I watched the show over the last few weeks, it became apparent that the best photographs of people were by Ben Shahn, not the more famous (as a photographer) Dorothea Lange. So I'm publishing this book to help Shahn become better known. (I previously published a book of 500 Dorothea Lange photographs.) Shahn had a "casual attitude about matters of photographic technique" (see next page), but he knew how to choose his subjects, where to point the camera, and when to press the shutter.
