This incident led to the first race riot in the United States after the war. The riot, which took place in the black section of Columbia known as Mink Slide, fomented national outrage and involvement of numerous interested parties including Thurgood Marshall, Eleanor Roosevelt, the NAACP, the Communist Party, and the U.S. Department of Justice.
