<p>The stories one tells reveal clues to one's character as well as to one's understanding of the world in which one lives.  In his stories Jesus spoke mainly of secular subjects even when confronting the religious leaders.  Speaking of God in a secular way is effective in a secular environment, where people are concerned about the necessities of life, their work, their wealth, their families, their health, sex, the weather, and about adverse situations such as poverty, unemployment, exploitation, sickness, divorce, death, etc.  Many images of Jesus lack a socio-economic dimension. They show a pious, non-worldly person so focused on religious phenomena as to be detached from the realities of this world, a dreamer, a mystic, an ascetic, etc., incompatible with the image of Jesus revealed through his parables.  Jesus' parables are full of violence, and the violence in Jesus' parables reflects the violence in his world.  The various types of violence found in Jesus' parables are those we experience even today.</p>
