<p>An informal conversation among friends took place in 1987 in the small college town of Oberlin, Ohio. Six years later, years filled with planning, recruiting, construction - complete with mud, dust, and freezing cold - and with the involvement of hundreds of interested and dedicated men and women, there emerged in 1993 one of the nation's most remarkable continuing care retirement communities. Twenty years after the opening, it's time to tell the story of Kendal at Oberlin, a tale of challenges overcome and values and principles deepened. The period described here is one in which many of the basic elements of retirement in our society have shifted. The heart of the story has to do with accommodating those fundamental shifts while maintaining the community's commitments to its ideals, to its residents and staff, and to its region. The future looks bright because the past and present have prepared the community for continued change. Richard Baznik is a resident of Kendal at Oberlin. He is vice president emeritus at Case Western Reserve University, where he continues to serve as university historian and as a part-time lecturer.</p>
