Growing up during the Second World War, Mike Reynolds became so interested in soldiering that he decided to make the Army his life. Joining as a National Serviceman, to see if he would really like being a soldier, he made the decision to become a professional and was commissioned into The Queen's Royal Regiment. He saw action and was wounded severely in the Korean War but recovered and eventually rose to command an infantry battalion. In between, he had his first taste of Northern Ireland in 1969 and later returned as a Commanding Officer. He commanded 12 Mechanized Brigade in Germany and was later appointed to command the multi-national Allied Mobile Force (Land), during which time he was a target for a number of terrorist groups. On retiring from the Army, Mike Reynolds became a well-known military historian and author.

A full account of the making, during1909-10, of Der Rosenkavalier with emphasis on its derivation from a French operette of 1907, L'Ingenu libertin, which was seen in Paris by Count Harry Kessler and which formed thebasis of the opera then to be written by Hofmannsthal and Strauss. Previous scholarship has credited the narrative and characters of Der Rosenkavalier to much older French sources known to, and studied by Hofmannsthal, but this book shows clearly how every element in L'Ingenu libertin is in fact taken (and transformed) by Kessler and Hofmannsthal into the work that made fortunes for Hofmannsthal and Strauss, but left Kessler on the sidelines. Michael Reynolds casts a major new light on Strauss's most popular operatic success, highlighting in particular how it was that Hofmannsthal - who had not until then had any theatrical success as an original playwright - was advised and empowered by Kessler to produce a work that succeeded onstage from its very first performance and went rapidly on to conquer the stages of the world.

This is the story of the two divisions: the American 29th and the British 3rd. After describing the agonies suffered by the Americans on Omaha, and the difficulties that face the British in overcoming strong points at Sword Beach on D-Day, the author traces both divisions as they try to break through the German defenses. It was to take the GI’s nearly six weeks to reach their objective, whilst the Tommies were forced into a concurrent holding operation redolent of the trench warfare experience of World War One. The main part of Caen, the central communication point and respective objective was eventually captured on the 9th July, but by this point, the two Allied divisions had suffered more than 10,000 casualties, and several thousands of French civilians had been killed.

Michael Reynold’s account compares the lives of Allied generals Bernard Montgomery and George Patton. Born two years apart, both were commissioned within a year of each other and both were wounded in France in the First World War. Both men encompassed very different but very valuable characteristics in combat: Monty-careful and meticulous, Patton-dashing and diplomatic. Despite the differences, both generals demonstrated striking similarities: commitment to their careers, a ruthless egotism, interesting when you consider neither held superior command. This did not impede their desire for the limelight and fame in warfare, arrogance and the manipulation of colleagues in high places to advance their careers. Both were machiavellian in their own affairs and self-interested in their own personal progression.Neither Monty nor Patton were pleasant people, they did not like the other very much, but their ambitious and calculating personalities make them fantastic subject material. Reynolds includes their contributions to the victory in North Africa and Europe as well as a superb overview of their respective command.
