This commemorative edition of Amish Acres: Stamps of Approval is being published to coincide with The United States Postal Service First Day of Issue Ceremony for the “Amish Quilts” commemorative stamps to be held at noon, August 9, 2001 on the Joseph Stein Stage of the Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres in Nappanee, Indiana. The theatre is the National Home of “Plain and Fancy,” the 1955 Broadway musical about Amish life and love, celebrating its 15th season at the historic farm. The stamps celebrate the contributions of Amish quilters over the last two centuries across America to their distinctive and practical art form. Frank Ramirez and Richard Pletcher have collaborated to create this history of Amish Acres and the development of the Round Barn Theatre into one of the nation’s busiest regional musical theatres. The book is divided into two sections. The first covers the history of the acquisition, preservation and restoration of the Stahly-Nissley-Kuhns farmstead into Amish Acres heritage resort. It has subsequently become the only Old-Order Amish farm listed on The National Register of Historic Places. The second section, “This Wooden O,” follows Ramirez’s insight into each theatrical production that has taken the stage of the Round Barn Theatre over the last decade and a half.
