This is the first social and political history of Urdu. It analyzes the historiography of the language-narratives about its names, linguistic ancestry, place of birth-to the politics of identity construction among the Hindus and Muslims of India during the last two centuries. More importantly, and for the first time, it provides a historical account of the use of Urdu in social domains such as employment, education, printing and publishing, radio, films and television etc. These accounts are connected with the expression of Hindu and Muslim identity politics during the last two centuries. This is a history of the evolution of Urdu from a common language of Indian Hindus and Muslims from the fifteenth till the eighteenth centuries to its standardization into two languages: Persianised Urdu and Sanskritised Hindi. The writer looks at narratives of the names, theories of genealogy and places of origin of the language in relation to the political imperatives of the identity politics of Hindus and Muslims during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In short the historiography is analysed with reference to its political and ideological dimensions which is a new angle of analysis in the linguistic history of Urdu. This is also the first history of the use of Urdu in social domains: employment in courts, administration, educational institutions, printing and publication, radio, films etc. The point is to provide a historical narrative of such used and, more importantly, to relate this to the identity construction which inevitably flowed from it. Thus, this social history of the language is also a political history.

This is the first history of Pakistani literature written in English. It includes those authors who either migrated to Pakistan or whose work is highly relevant to the themes engaging the writers of the new country in the years immediately before and after Partition. It contains a historical account of the novels, drama, belles lettres, and especially of poetry, written from the late 1940s until 1988, when this book was first written. It also contains a bibliography, which is important since some of this material is now untraceable. Although there have been considerable later additions to the genres covered in this history, there is no other comparable historical account of Pakistani literature in English during these first forty years.This book covers the course of post-colonial literature in Pakistan and the new course on Pakistani literature in English that is being taught at universities in Pakistan.

This book is the first scholarly study of personal names in Pakistan and is based on an analysis of names from all over the country, both from the early years and from the contemporary period. The only earlier study was by Sir Richard Temple in 1883 and the data for that came from East Punjab, now in India. Thus there was only one chapter on Muslim names in it. This work describes beliefs about names, onomastic practices, and changes in names during the last sixty years or so. Names are indexed with identity and reflect a personas religion, sect, class, region (urban or rural), degree of modernization, and ethnic origin. They may be markers of social worth or stigmas. In some situations they may well be dangerous and people may conceal their names or take up new names to avoid persecution. This study of names, therefore, provides insights into the way identity, ideology, and power are inter-related in Pakistan.
