Lightpoints is a collection of uplifting, authentic and concise insights from the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe on the Torah. These meticulously selected insights, many adapted here into English for the first time, were originally published individually each weekday in print and email, and enthusiastically received by thousands of people from all segments of the international Jewish community.This collection aims to provide the English-speaking community with a taste of the Rebbe's vast contributions to Jewish scholarship. Some Lightpoints focus more on the Torah and its commentaries; others highlight the relevance of the Torah's lessons in our day and age. As their name indicates, the Lightpoints are intended to be short and easy to read, but more importantly, they are points of light to illuminate our perspective on the Torah, and direct us along the Torah's path of truth and holiness that guides our lives.

Maamarim include: Basi Legani 5711 "I came into my garden" - refers to the love a leader has for his people. Lo Sih'yeh Meshakeilah 5712 "there shall be no barren woman" - refers to the state of being devoid of the emotions of love and fear BeYom Ashtei-Asar Yom 5731 "on the 11th day" - 11th day of the gifts of the princes of the Twelve Tribes to the Tabernacle - the 11th prince is Asher, and the Rebbe's birthday's on 11 Nissan. Mayim Rabim 5738 "many waters' - waters of worldly involvement can't extinguish the divine soul VeAtah Tetzaveh 5741 "and thou shalt command" - about Moses to command the people to bring pure olive oil, crushed for the luminary - the luminary referring to the King, or ultimately the Messiah. Here, with crushing, the idea of humility is also discussed.

Studies in Rashi - Vayikra

Beginning in late 1964, after the passing of his mother, Rebbetzin Chana, the Rebbe began dedicating a segment of his weekly Shabbat public gatherings to the study of Rashi`s classic biblical commentary. What soon emerged was an innovative method for both the study and analysis of the Bible`s pre-eminent commentator, and Bible study itself.These talks continued for more than twenty-five years. The publication of Studies in Rashi aims to open this unique dimension of the Rebbe`s scholarship to the ever-growing numbers of English speaking students aspiring to serious textual study.The essays were translated by Rabbi Y. Eliezer Danzinger, and are fully annotated in Hebrew and English. The volume is further enhanced with a detailed bibliography and comprehensive index.

Studies in Rashi - Bamidbar

An exposition on the deeper significance of Chanukah, viewed through the lens of Chabad-Chasidism. Here, the Rebbe explains that the war of the Greeks was a spiritual one, aimed at eradicating the notion that Torah and mitzvot are holy, G-d given and Divine. The hellenistic Greeks wished to secularize Judaism, to turn it from a supra-rational "faith" into a very rational system of philosophy and moral conduct. And in this sense the Greek Empire is very much alive: there still exist forces- from both without and within -that wish us to forget that Judaism is G-dly. The victory of the Jews over the Greeks represents the vistory of the supra-rational over the rational, the G-dly over the secular. We therfore immortalize Chanukah by lighting fiery lamps against the darkness of night, to celebrate the Victory of Light.

The Chasidic discourses presented here explore the deeper dimensions of the Exodus, and teach how one can experience the transition from slavery to freedom on a daily basis. Delivered by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, R. Menachem M. Schneerson, of blessed memory, on 11 Nissan and Achron Shel Pesach, 5734 (1974), respectively, they build upon a fundamental theme in Chasidic philosophy.More than just a geographical region, "Egypt" represents any obstacle that limits our ability to be our real selves and reach our true potential. A Talmudic exegesis by the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson. Adapted from two siyumim delivered by the Rebbe (on tractates Makkot and Yoma), Of Tears and Laughter focuses on two moving Talmudic stories that occurred in the aftermath of the destruction of the second Beit Hamikdash. With his unique, holistic approach to Torah study, the Rebbe explores the positions taken by the leading Sages of that time, and examines their lives and teachings. With a spotlight on Rabbi Akiva and his response, the Rebbe searches the Talmud for laws taught by Rabbi Akiva, his life's story and allusions to the composition of his very soul, to provide a comprehensive and insightful reasoning for Rabbi Akiva's optimism. Of Tears and Laughter

Throughout the years of his leadership, the Rebbe would issue a message to the public, in connection with the major festivals on the Jewish calendar-the High Holidays and Passover. In some years, the Rebbe issued messages prior to other Jewish festivals as well.Although distinctly Torah communications, much in line with the insights and original scholarship that filled the Rebbe's talks and writings, these letters were composed as personal and timely messages for the specific people, places, and times spelled out in the letter's salutation: "To the Sons and Daughters of Our People Israel, Everywhere."Known in Hebrew as michtavim klaliim ("public, or circular letters"), they set the tone for the upcoming holidays, with the Rebbe shedding light on particular spiritual meanings, demands, and opportunities of the season, urging us to contemplate the messages highlighted in the letter as we prepare to reexperience that special time.Marked by an effusiveness not found in his other works, here the Rebbe addresses foundational themes in Jewish thought about our purpose and responsibilities as Jews, and articulates them in layman's terms, underscoring the relevance of these ideas today.The Rebbe penned the letters in Yiddish, which in turn, were translated into English and Hebrew, all to be reviewed by the Rebbe before their release. This two-volume set contains the English translations of these letters, as reviewed by the Rebbe.
