The book explores the canal and steamboats in the Illinois Valley.  The author begins with the idea of building a waterway that would connect the Illinois River and Lake Michigan, and takes the reader through the history of its construction.  This book includes many historical photographs and drawings that can be compared to the modern-day Illinois Valley.

<p>This is a non-fiction account of the Cherry, IL coal mine fire, which claimed the lives of 259 men and boys in Nov. 1909. Research is mainly based on original newspaper interviews in 1909-1910, a 700-page inquest report, and personal acocunts by survivors. The book is illustrated with over 175 photos and 2 mine diagrams. Present day, on-site photographs, a bibliography and list of all fatalities with ages, ethnictiy, and specific occupation are included.</p>

Fire Below! The Cherry Mine Disaster of 1909

The material found in this work was primarily derived from over 50,000 pages of microfilm information found in the LaSalle Post-Tribune, the Ottawa Republican- Times, the Morris Herald, the Bureau County Republican, and the Putnam County Record. Additional information was obtained from personal interviews with individuals who experienced the events and relatives of those individuals. The author would like to express his appreciation to the employees of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and librarians, who assisted in the research for this work.
