The thirty chapters in this long awaited book tell the in depth story of the ingenious half-locked roller action, from the curiously simultaneous development of initial prototypes by two German companies during World War II - the Mauser Gerät 06H and the Grossfuss MG42V - right through to the present day.After the war the roller lock was taken first to France, where several hitherto little-known assault rifle prototypes were developed by ex-Mauser engineers in calibres 7.65x35mm French short and 7.62x33mm (.30 US carbine).In 1950 the roller lock moved to Spain, where what became the CETME family of roller-locked weapons was developed by ex-Mauser engineer Ludwig Vorgrimler, initially chambered for the unorthodox 7.92x41mm cartridge. By the mid-1950s the roller lock had returned - "Full Circle" - to Germany, and a co-operative manufacturing programme had been established between CETME and the fledgling German armsmaking firm Heckler &amp; Koch GmbH, whose pre-adoption prototypes included the 7.62mm NATO calibre H&amp;K "STG CETME" and the H&amp;K "DM3 (CETME)".The finalised G3 rifle was adopted by the Bundeswehr in 1959, and nearly two million examples were produced by H&amp;K and Rheinmetall with fixed, folding and retractable buttstocks. The roller lock action then formed the basis for the H&amp;K weapons "family", consisting of numerous models and variations of SMGs, carbines, rifles and machine guns in calibres ranging in power from 9mm Parabellum to - very briefly - .50 Browning! Versions of the G3 and other H&amp;K arms were also sold commercially (we list 25 countries using ready-made H&amp;K product), and manufactured abroad under license. Models made by or for Burma, Denmark, Greece, Iran, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, Pakistan, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Thailand and Turkey are depicted and described, with clear illustrations of their unique features and markings.Final chapters include an overview of the burgeoning Aftermarket - H&amp;K and CETME.

The book begins with a historical overview of early FN self-loading rifles, all of which were discontinued not because of inherent problems but because of external events-usually wars-the overwhelming import of which took precedence over further development. After the German occupation of Belgium in 1940, the British seized upon FN's new gas-operated self-loading rifle and beginning in 1943, RSAF Enfield manufactured at least 51 examples of what was generally known as the SLEM (Self-Loading Experimental Model). Following the liberation of Belgium in late 1944 the self-loading rifle project was revived by FN, with comparative trials being conducted by the Royal Dutch Navy in 1947. The first commercial contract for what became the "FN49" was signed with Venezuela in 1948. Further orders from a number of countries were forthcoming over the next decade, leading to a total production of approximately 176,000 FN49s. We present new colour images of a complete collector's catalogue of all the contract models, in chronological order, which sheds new light on the developmental history of this fine arm. It contains extensive details on the development of the Echo scope mount, which was designed and patented by the American gunsmith and machinist Edward Herkner, whose story is told largely in his own (previously unpublished) words. The numerous component differences between the semi-automatic FN49 (the "SAFN") and the selective-fire version, the "AFN", are illustrated and explained. Two chapters cover combat use of the FN49 by the Belgian Volunteer Battalion in Korea and by Belgian and colonial troops (the Force Publique) in the Congo. A detailed retrospective production includes the complete, official FN Order List, plus further breakdowns of production and deliveries by year and by calibre. The book concludes with three chapters on Accessories and Ancillaries- handbooks, bayonets, cleaning kits, grenade launchers, scopes and slings-and a Bibliography.

The FN49 - the Rifle That Ran out of Time

This book is intended as a companion to the three-volume omnibus title The FAL Rifle, which comprises our original studies titled North American FALs (1979), UK and Commonwealth FALs (1980), and The Metric FAL (1981), initially published as three separate volumes. The first part of this book is a new retrospective on prototypes and ordered models of the FAL as produced by Fabrique Nationale (FN), following the chronological arrangement used in The Metric FAL, which deals with the FAL models of the various countries by initial ordering date.
