Vermeer van Delft gilt als der bedeutendste Schilderer holländischen Lebens im sog. Goldenen Zeitalter. Andeas Prater zeigt hingegen, dass und wie bestimmte Maximen und Sentenzen Epikurs und seines lateinischen Herolds Lukrez in Vermeers Malerei Eingang gefunden haben. Epikur wurde im 17. Jahrhundert wiederentdeckt und hinsichtlich seiner lange in Verruf geratenen Lehre von Freude und Lust rehabilitiert.
