Notre-Dame von Noyon wurde zur gleichen Zeit wie die Kathedrale von Laon und das Sudquerhaus von Soissons errichtet und ist ein bedeutendes Beispiel der fruhgotischen Architektur des 12. Jh. Der Bau wurde gegen 1148 mit dem Chorhaupt begonnen, darauf folgte das Querhaus, gegen 1204 war der Bau des Langhauses im Wesentlichen abgeschlossen, gegen 1230 war die Westfassade vollendet. Trotz der grossen Zerstorung im 1. Weltkrieg ist die prachtige, von Jacques Gondoin 1779 entworfene Chorausstattung erhalten geblieben. Ausserdem sind mehr als 300 Einrichtungsgegenstande auch heute noch zu sehen. Zu den interessantesten gehoren mehrere prachtvolle, mittelalterliche Mobelstucke und zahlreiche Werke der Schmiedeeisenkunst vom 12. bis 18. Jahrhundert. Das Domherrenviertel mit seinem Kreuzgang, dem Kapitelsaal aus dem 13. Jh., der Bibliothek aus dem 16. Jh. und der Sakristei aus dem 18. Jh. kann durchaus mit den Bauwerken der grossen, englischen Kathedralen verglichen werden.

The great Medieval cathedrals are among the most remarkable monuments of that era.
