The Manuscript Found in Saragossa

A literary masterpiece by a Polish traveller, aristocratic adventurer, political activist, ethnographer and publisher Alphonse, a young Walloon officer, is travelling to join his regiment in Madrid in 1739. But he soon finds himself mysteriously detained at a highway inn in the strange and varied company of thieves, brigands, cabbalists, noblemen, coquettes and gypsies, whose stories he records over sixty-six days. The resulting manuscript is discovered some forty years later in a sealed casket, from which tales of characters transformed through disguise, magic and illusion, of honour and cowardice, of hauntings and seductions, leap forth to create a vibrant polyphony of human voices. Jan Potocki (1761-1812) used a range of literary styles - gothic, picaresque, adventure, pastoral, erotica - in his novel of stories-within-stories, which, like the Decameron and Tales from the Thousand and One Nights, provides entertainment on an epic scale. Manuscrito encontrado en Zaragoza es una novela gótica publicada por Jan Potocki en 1804 y 1805, adaptada al cine por el director polaco Wojciech Has en 1965. Construida según la técnica del relato enmarcado, con historias dentro de historias que se ramifican y entremezclan, al modo de Los cuentos de Canterbury, el Decamerón o Las mil y una noches, la obra fue comenzada en 1797 y publicada en dos partes. El autor trabajó en ella hasta completarla poco antes de su suicidio.

En 2002, Dominique Triaire et Franois Rosset, deux chercheurs lancs sur les traces de l'excentrique comte polonais Jean Potocki, dcouvrent six manuscrits mal classs dans les archives de Poznan (Pologne). L'tude minutieuse de ces documents leur permet d'tablir un fait incroyable : il n'existe pas une, mais deux versions au moins du Manuscrit trouv Saragosse. Cette uvre culte, crite en franais, fut longtemps considre comme un joyau de la littrature fantastique, et fascina des gnrations d'crivains, des romantiques aux surralistes. Or nul ne l'a jamais lue que sous une forme tronque ou amalgamant, en un patchwork infidle, les textes d'origine ! Commenc avant 1794, rcrit pendant prs de vingt ans jusqu'au suicide de son auteur, le Manuscrit trouv Saragosse, d'abord baroque, foisonnant et libertin (version de 1804), fut par la suite entirement remani et achev sous une forme plus srieuse et encyclopdique (version de 1810). Le double chef-d'uvre de Potocki, prs de deux sicles plus tard, peut enfin tre lu.
