The Elegant World of Regina Relang is just that, an enchanting volume of pictures presenting a whirlwind tour through the entrancing world of haute couture that the late German photographer recorded throughout the mid-twentieth century. 160 of the best original images from Relang's estate follow the lady shutterbug's eye as she worked the Paris fashion shows, from her first days at Vogue in 1938 through to her rise as one of the leading fashion photographers of the 1950s and 1960s. Her spectacular images of the most forward, fashionable styles were featured twice a year in all of the major German fashion journals, for whom she represented the essence of the catwalk-shooting genre. This handsomely illustrated volume reproduces fine vintage prints from Relang's early reportage career and from the height of her days as a documenter of style, while also providing valuable insight into the historical background of her work. The Elegant World of Regina Relang chronicles the changing fashions of Christian Dior, Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint-Laurent, among other arbiters of la mode, while also tracing the transformation of the image of woman through the mid-twentieth century.

Since 2003, Beatrice Minda (*1968 in Munich), formerly a pupil of Katharina Sieverding at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, has been working on a series of photographs that carefully explores questions regarding the relationship of homeland, exile, and (collective) identity, of the personal and political histories of a country. The first photographs of interiors were taken in Romania and reflect, as the artist says, the "atmospheres of the spaces in my childhood." Other photographs were taken in Paris, Munich, and Berlin, which were the preferred destinations of twentieth-century Romanian migrants. In a third section, Minda photographed the shacks of Romanian migrant workers in the suburbs of Paris, where she also discovered a lovingly staged piece of her homeland.This volume is the first to present this wonderful series, along with a text by Ulrich Pohlmann and a literary essay by German-Romanian author Richard Wagner. A European analogue to Mitch Epstein's stirring project American Power, Jürgen Nefzger's photographic series Fluffy Clouds likewise depicts tranquil landscapes with the apparatus of atomic power looming just behind. In Nefzger's idyllic views of Europe, deliberately evocative of Romantic and pastoral themes, sheep graze on hilly meadows, bathers sun themselves at the beach and a lone fisherman contemplates a riverbank. Yet cooling towers and nuclear reactors are never far away--sometimes overtly visible, sometimes only hinted at by distant misty clouds. What hope does nature's classic beauty have when pitted against the destructive effects of human intervention? Fluffy Clouds, which also includes text by Ulrich Pohlmann, depicts this difficult juxtaposition, while simultaneously critiquing the atomic energy PR image of a halcyon world in harmony with the use of nuclear energy. Nefzger's images reveal the conflicts behind that apparent innocence, and the serious threat behind the fantasy.

For more than 30 years now, American photographer Roger Ballen (born 1950) has been shooting portraits of the impoverished white population of rural South Africa. Likened to the work of master documentarians Walker Evans and Diane Arbus, Ballen's controversial photographs can be brutal, funny, tender and appalling. His day laborers and transients eek out a seemingly wretched existence in the country's so-called Platteland--a hermetically sealed world rarely captured on film. Ballen shoots exclusively in black and white, and portrays his subjects against the backdrop of their own living spaces, whose spartan interiors he transforms into claustrophobic, almost surrealistic stage sets, creating sculptural tableaux with wire, dilapidated furniture, animals and drawings. Published on the occasion of a retrospective at the Münchner Stadtmuseum, this monograph explores Ballen's extraordinarily expressive brand of photographic mythmaking.

One of the stars of fashion photography and one of its most resolute interpreters of beauty and fashion, Juergen Teller is known for disregarding conventions and pointing his camera behind the scenes of glamour to reveal models in all their personality and vulnerabiliy. Teller serves the world of the beautiful, but with a critical, personal eye. In his last book, More, he collaborated with supermodel Stephanie Seymour, photographing her in her three lavish homes, surrounded by her art collection, her home furnishings, her property and her unexpectedly hilarious, bare-all, exaggerated attitude. This examination of the private sphere led Teller to produce his most recent series, Märchenstberl, which explores his and his family's roots--literally. Taking his camera down into the basement of his parents' house, he photographed their wet bar, known among family members as the Märchenstberl (“fairy tale corner”). Intensely reminiscent and abstractly personal, Märchenstberl also contains selections from Teller's entire body of work, providing the first complete look at his multifaceted work.

"The German-American photographer Frank Eugene (1865-1936) is regarded internationally as one of the most innovative art photographers of the period prior to the first World War. He studied painting under Wilhelm von Diez at the Munich Academy of Art and was then active as a portrait painter of famous actors and musicians. He first came to the attention of a wider public as a photographer in 1899 on the occasion of a solo exhibition in the New York Camera Club. As a founder-member of the Photo-Secession, his works were included in almost all the important exhibitions in North America and Europe organized by that association. His method of manipulating his negatives by etching and drawing on them attracted particular attention and gained him the name of a painter-photographer.
