Alfred Stieglitz's Camera Notes

This striking volume details the history of Camera Notes, the most significant and influential American photographic periodical of its time. Published quarterly by the Camera Club of New York and edited by Alfred Stieglitz, the fountainhead of American art photography, Camera Notes represented a critical phase in the campaign to legitimize the photo image as an artistic pursuit. Throughout most of its six-year life (1897-1903), the publication included thoughtful articles on photography and fine art as well as hundreds of halftone images and stunning high-quality photogravures. While much has been written on Stieglitz's life--including his later publication, Camera Work--little attention has been giving to Camera Notes. All ninety-one of the beautiful photogravures that appeared during the journals life are reproduced here in their original tones. In addition, this volume contains a fully illustrated index of the more than 250 halftones that appeared on its pages.

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts holds the Upper Midwest’s most significant permanent collection of fine photographs. Covering the entire history of the medium, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. This beautiful book opens with an 1845 salt print by the English inventor William Henry Fox Talbot and closes with a 2002 color portrait by Alec Soth from his series Sleeping by the Mississippi. Peter Henry Emerson (1856-1936) was a leading English photographer who spearheaded a style he termed "naturalistic photography." He argued for photography as a fine art, encouraged his colleagues to use nature as their standard, and introduced the theory of "differential focusing," whereby the main subject was in focus and everything else fell into moderate softness. Many young Americans admired Emerson's work, forming a movement of naturalistic photography in this country that lasted from the 1890s to about 1930. Like Emerson, they emphasized the beauty of Mother Nature and humankind's harmony with her, photographing the land in all its seasons. Among the photographers whose work is included are Edward Curtis, Rudolf Eickemeyer, Alfred Stieglitz, and Doris Ulman.

A trip through Minneapolis rock concert history framed through psychedelic poster art In the years 1969-1970 the Minneapolis Labor Temple burned brightly as the center of the Twin Cities music scene. The Labor Temple was transformed into a rock club with a 1,200-person capacity and hosted famous acts such as the Grateful Dead, Spirit, Ten Years After, Muddy Waters, and the Byrds. This included several local bands like the Litter and Jokers Wild that would be opening acts.&nbsp; Cosmic Trip is the story of this famed club framed through the poster art of Juryj Ostroushko. The posters were inspired by the psychedelic art coming out of San Francisco at the time, each with hand-lettered typography used to simulate the effects of recreational drugs. This book moves chronologically through every concert hosted by the Labor Temple and each poster is accompanied by a descriptive review of the concert along with additional memorabilia. This duet of music history is a trip down memory lane. &nbsp;
