Gottfried Bohm is one of the most significant architects of the post-war era. The only German to win the Pritzker prize, he became famous for his church buildings such as the Church of the Pilgrimage at Neviges. Yet his work encompasses the whole range of modern building activities, from single-family housing to urban development. The town hall in Bensberg, the residential development in Cologne, the town halls in Rheinberg and Bochholt and the Zublin corporate headquarters in Stuttgart, each is a testimonial to Bohm's individuality. Of his more recent works, the Deutsche Bank in Luxembourg and the media and business premises of the WDR in Cologne are amongst the most important. Bohm's works demonstrate a high degree of sensitivity for the differing conditions of the location, whilst maintaining their own firm and unmistakeable character. The present volume is a compendium of Gottfried Bohm's most important buildings and projects, complemented by biographical details, a list of works and a bibliography.

First theorized by composer Richard Wagner, the total artwork, or "gesamtkunstwerk," proposed a synthesis of all arts towards a single, unified spectacle. Wagner's ambitious conception flowered in the early twentieth century throughout numerous avant gardes, particularly in German Expressionism, where art forms cross-pollinated and collaborated to a remarkable degree. Past considerations of Expressionism have tended to focus only on individual genres, making The Total Artwork in Expressionism: Art, Film, Literature, Theater, Dance and Architecture 1905-1925 the first-ever publication to examine the interplay between these forms. Here, masterpieces of Expressionist film such as Robert Wiene's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari are united with set designs; the works of painters and set designers such as Ernst Barlach, Otto Bartning, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Wassily Kandinsky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Oskar Kokoschka and Ludwig Meidner are examined, alongside film stills by César Klein and Hans Poelzig; and documents by Bruno Taut and Ernst Toller, music scores by Paul Hindemith, poster art, dance masks and stage photographs provide historical and archival background, building a unique panorama of the Expressionist period. German architect Egon Eiermann (1904–70) designed a number of intriguing postwar structures, such as the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin and the chancery for the German embassy in Washington, DC. This book explores the history of Eiermann’s last major project, the Olivetti towers, a unique pair of high-rise buildings in Frankfurt am Main. The Olivetti firm produced office machinery that has since come to enjoy cult status in the field of design, and during the postwar years, the company was run by an Italian family that valued not only high-quality products, but also high-quality architecture. Accordingly, Roberto Olivetti commissioned Eiermann, a famous representative of German modernism, to create the German branch offices. For Eiermann, the project would mark a high point in his career, and this book presents that culmination with engaging text by historian Wolfgang Pehnt and numerous illustrations by Klaus Kinold, a former student of the great architect.

Neoclassicism’s most prominent exponent in Prussia, Karl Friedrich Schinkel is revered today for his reshaping of Berlin as Prussia’s capital, and for catalyzing the Greek Revival in Germany. Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) was one of the most significant reformers of the twentieth century. He founded the Waldorf school movement, made vital contributions to alternative agriculture and medicine and also left behind a comprehensive oeuvre as an architect, designer and artist. Steiner's most important work of architecture, the Goetheanum (1924-1928) in Dornach, Switzerland, is a key work of early modern architecture: never before had concrete been utilized in such a sculptural way on such a large scale. As an artist, Steiner influenced many people, including Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky and Joseph Beuys. Even today, prominent artists such as Olafur Eliasson and Tony Cragg draw inspiration from his work. The central Mosque of the Turkish-Islamic Union in Köln-Ehrenfeld has given us one of the most vigorously discussed German building projects of the past 10 years. With this spectacular domed structure, Paul Böhm, the youngest son of Pritzker Prize-winner Gottfried Böhm and grandchild of Dominikus Böhm, has successfully introduced the Osman mosque typus into the modern age. The dome and minaret provide the Turkish / Islamic community with visual identification points. At the same time, this shell-construction structure is broken up into individual segments in a manner that opens it up to both the neighbourhood and the world. Containing conference halls, rooms for community use, a bazaar, a library and a museum, the complex is intended to convey to the surrounding area a message of retained ties to the historical country of origin coupled with acceptance and integration into the new homeland, and a willingness to engage in dialogue. Up to now the mosque represents the high point of the architectural career of Paul Böhm, who was born in 1959 and who is teaching at the Fachhochschule Köln. His work encompasses a multitude of exciting projects and realized buildings, including cultural buildings, university buildings, administration buildings and residential buildings. It is, perhaps, unsurprising that an architect who comes from a family of church builders should have added an impressive religious structure to oeuvre. St. Theodor in Köln-Vingst is a centralplan building that possesses a coherent atmosphere suited to contemplation whilst, at the same time, opening itself to a part of the city that suffers from social problems. Figures who have played a significant role in Paul Böhm’s professional development include Tadao Ando, the master of velvetsmooth concrete, Oswald Mathias Ungers, the great lover of geometry, and Peter Zumthor, the essentialist of his generation. Like these three figures, the architects who Böhm worked with prior to founding his own firm in 2001, all espoused very different philosophies of architecture: Otto Steidle, Anton Schweighofer, Richard Meier. Paul Böhm does, of course, also owe a debt to the traditions of the family of architects that he comes from—a tradition that he continues in his own individual way.
