<p>La primera edició de la novel·la Mecanoscrit del segon origen es va publicar el 1974. Ha estat, fins ara, l'obra més llegida del seu autor, Manuel de Pedrolo . El 1996, quan la novel·la ja duia quaranta-cinc edicions, Carme Ballús en preparà una nova edició en la col·lecció El Cangur d'Edicions 62, amb la qual es pre tenia posar a l'abast de tots els públics un seguit de propostes i entreteniments per llegir millor el Mecanoscrit. L'edició actual, amb el seu estudi introductori, comentaris de text i propostes de treball variades, està adreçada sobretot als estudiants de secundària. Carme Ballús és professora de llengua catalana a l'IES A. Cumella de Granollers. Mecanoscrit del segon orígen és una novel·la composta de cinc capítols anomenats Quaderns, d'una extensió molt semblant (trenta pàgines cadascun) i de tres pàgines finals, on el lector pot completar el veritable sentit de l'obra.
