پارسونز پنج ‌سال از دوران فعالیت دیپلماتیک خود را در ایران گذراند. در این اثر نیز طبق سنت مألوف، شاهد مقاومت و مخالفت انگلیس در برابر انقلاب اسلامی و استقلال‌ طلبی ملت ایران هستیم؛ به‌طوری که پارسونز بارها نگرانی و مخالفت خود را از سقوط شاه و وقوع انقلاب اسلامی ابراز می‌کند.\nسر انتونی پارسونز، سفیر کبیر سابق انگلیس در ایران که مدت پنج سال، از سال 1352 تا 1357 عهده‌دار این سمت در ایران بوده است، دیپلمات حرفه‌ای است که قبل از احراز سمت سفیر انگلیس در ایران، در ترکیه، اردن، مصر، سودان و بخرین خدمت کرده و آخرین سمت وی قبل از سفارت انگلیس در ایران، معاونت امور خاورمیانه در وزارت امور خارجه‌ی انگلستان بود.\nغرور و سقوط بیان خاطرات دوران اقامت او در ایران در مقام سفیر انگلیس است. پارسونز در این کتاب کوشیده تا مشاهدات خود درباره‌ی اشخاص نظیر: خاندان سلطنتی، رجال مملکتی، سفرا و نمایندگان خارجی و...، همچنین حوادث رخ‌داده طی اقامت پنج ساله‌اش در ایران: از جمله فراز و نشیب‌های اجتماعی، اقتصادی و سیاسی، کارها و اقدامات شاه، چگونگی تعارضات بین رژیم و مخالفانش، تظاهرات،‌ اعتصاب‌ها و درگیری‌های بین ارتش و مردم به پا خاسته و نظیر اینها را تشریح نماید.\nبه دلیل نزدیکی ارتباط با شاه،‌ اعضای خاندان سلطنتی و سران رژیم خاطرات وی می‌تواند بازگو کننده‌ی مطالبی باشد که کمتر در اختیار ما قرار داشته است. وی در مقدمه خود نوشته است: این کتاب، حاوی یادداشتهای شخصی است و داعیه‌ی علمی بودن ندارد. در حقیقت تاریخ پرماجرای ایران در دهه‌ی 70 میلادی، آنقدر به ما نزدیک است که تاریخ پژوهان و محققین هنوز نمی‌تواننند آن را با ریزبینی و دقت علمی مناسب بسنجند.\nفصول کتاب عبارتست از:\nزمینه‌ی مأموریت من
