Why do I Paint Flowers? First, an aesthetic reason, because flowers are nature's essence of creation, exemplifying with infinte variety the utmost in beauty of form, color and texture; second, a practical reason, because flowers offer the broadest challenge of Color! No other subject matter covers the whole range of hues, tints and shades of every color in the spectrum. Therefore the fastest and surest way to learn the full use of color is to learn the painting of flowers. Also, it is fascinating to search out the subtle plays of translucent lights coming through the delicate, semi-transparent petals. I still paint other subjects as they arise and find that color handling learned in painting flowers greatly facilitates the whole painting process regardless of subject matter. In preparing this book I not only attempt to show an approach through drawing, composition and design in presenting flower forms on the canvas but also to point the way towards getting control of the palette int he mixing of colors to bring out the real beauty of those forms.
