A Fountain, a House of Stone is a bilingual collection of poems by Cuba’s foremost living poet, Herbert Padilla, who now lives in exile in the United States. Padilla’s poems constitute a subtle but powerful poetry of domesticity in exile, in which his characteristically questioning, critical poetics have been not so much abandoned as subsumed. La publicación de "Fuera del juego", el libro más conocido del poeta cubano Heberto Padilla, provocó una controversia de dimensiones incalculables en la política cultural cubana y latinoamericana de los años sesenta y setenta. En esta obra, Padilla construía una alegoría de la represión y la censura en la dictadura cubana y fue por ello represaliado por el Gobierno. Sufrió arresto y fue obligado bajo tortura a proclamar oralmente y ante un nutrido público de escritores su arrepentimiento por haber traicionado con sus poemas a la revolución y a su líder. Esto provocó que la mayoría de los intelectuales y políticos europeos y americanos que habían aplaudido al régimen le retiraran su apoyo.
