One of the most important Russian playwrights of the nineteenth century, Alexander Ostrovsky (1823-1886) is credited with bringing realism to the Russian stage. Contemporary of Turgenev, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy and precursor to Chekhov, he was a keen sociological observer, often exposing abuses of power, landing him in trouble with the censors again and again. He wrote 47 original plays and began the tradition of acting today associated with Stanislavsky. Ostrovsky’s plays were written with performance in mind and with a masterful use of colloquial language. To this day they are a much-performed part of the Russian repertory.   This volume collects four of Ostrovsky’s key plays, each from a different decade―A Profitable Position, An Ardent Heart, Without a Dowry, and Talents and Admirers, and is rounded out by the translator’s introduction, an afterword for each play, an extensive bibliography, and complete list of Ostrovsky’s works.

History & Criticism

One of the best dramas of Ostrovsky is The Thunderstorm (translated into English as The Storm). The scene is laid in a small provincial town, somewhere in the upper Volga, where the manners of the local tradespeople have retained the stamp of primitive wildness. There is, for instance, one old merchant, Dikoy, very much respected by the inhabitants, who represents a special type of tyrants whom Ostrovsky has so well depicted. Dikoy is deaf to entreaties and to tears, and laughs at other people suffering. The chief interest in this novel centered in its essentially poetical subject. Katerína, in the environment of her brutal samodúr mother-in law and weak, dissipating husband, feels the necessity of a poetical union with a kindred soul, a feeling wich has been nurtured by the recollection of a happy youth passed in a loving family in one of the charming spots along the Vólga.

ALEXANDER NIKOLAYEVICH Ostrovsky (1823-86) is the great Russian dramatist of the central decades of the nineteenth century, of the years when the realistic school was all-powerful in Russian literature, of the period when Turgenev, stoyevsky, and Tolstoy created a literature of prose fiction that has had no superior in the world's history. His work in the drama takes its place beside theirs in the novel. Obviously inferior as it is incertain ways, it yet sheds light on an important side of Russian life that they left practically untouched. Turgenev and Tolstoy were gentlemen by birth, and wrote of the fortunes of the Russian nobility or of the peasants whose villages bordered on the nobles' estates. Dostoyevsky, though not of this landed-proprietor school, still dealt with the nobility, albeit withits waifs and strays. None of these masters more than touched the Russian merchants, that homespun moneyed class, crude and coarse, grasping and mean, without the idealism of their educated neighbors in the cities or the homely charm of the peasants from whom they themselves sprang, yet giftedwith a rough force and determination not often found among the cultivated aristocracy. This was the field that Ostrovsky made peculiarly his own.
