Many have written on the subject, but none with the vast amount of experience this author brings to the possibility of extinction of the species that are whaled. He gives a complete history of whaling comparing the early years with present day explosive harpoons, fast ships, and modern sonar giving the whale no chance. He ends the book with a discussion of conserving the stocks before the great whales are made extinct. It is written with style and grace, yet making his points movingly and convincingly. A must have book for those who study whales and whaling.
