This book is the product of clinical work with children under the Louisiana Department of Hospitals' Evaluation Center for Exceptional Children and the Louisiana Department of Health's Division of Maternal and Child Health, vocational and educational counseling of adults a the Tulane University Guidance Center, with Social Science Consultants in New Orleans, with the New Orleans Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, work at the University of Guam Counseling and Testing Center, and psychological research with the New Orleans Protestant Home for Babies.Although all of these professional experience have contributed significantly the the formulation of the specific ideas contained in this book, the most crucial has been the Mental Health Clinic held monthly and semi-monthly over an eight year period at the West Baton Rouge Parish Unit in Port Allen, Louisiana, under the Louisiana Department of Health. Children referred to this clinic were given physical and psychological examinations, their parents and teachers were interviewed, and the findings discussed by staff. As conclusions were reached, lengthy interpretive discussions were held with the parents, often involving several sessions."
