Then, at the age of twenty-five, he turned his back on this early success to become a traveller and landscape painter. Largely unrecognized during his lifetime, he is now considered to be one of the finest painters of the Victoria age. Always an outsider, yet at ease with the noblest in the land, Lear was a friend of the Pre-Raphaelites and of Tennyson, and was drawing master to Queen Victoria. This is the first edition of Edward Lear's letters for nearly eighty years, and the first to draw on all his known correspondence, which is now scattered in private and public collections throughout the world. Most of the letters have never before been published. They span the years from 1826 to 1888, tracing both his private life and his career - as landscape painter, traveller, nonsense writer, and one of the greatest ornithological draughtsmen this country has ever produced. They vividly illustrate the hardships and excitements of 19th-century travel, the happy ebullience of the nonsense writer, and the sad loneliness of a man isolated by the secret of his epilepsy. The letters are characteristic and revealing - particularly those to his sister Ann, which form the most important correspondence of his life. To all his correspondents, however, from zoologists to painters, politicians to children, he wrote with an artist's vivid observation, and with complete originality.

This volume, part of the the 21st-Century Oxford Authors series, presents all of the surviving writings of Isaac Rosenberg (1890-1918): poetry, plays, prose works, and letters. The book also provides a commentary giving details of the composition and publication of the poems and plays and throws light on the people, places, and incidents described in both these and the letters. An introduction places the collection in context and a chronological table describes the main events of his life. There are also examples of his paintings and drawings. Although best known as a war poet, most of Rosenberg's work pre-dates the war. The son of Jewish immigrants from Lithuania, he grew up in London's East End. Financially impoverished, he nevertheless lived in a society that valued artistic creativity - among his friends were Mark Gertler and David Bomberg. He was a painter as well as a poet, and studied at the Slade School of Art. He knew many of the leading poets of the day, and his letters, in particular those to Edward Marsh and Gordon Bottomley, throw fascinating light on his own poetic creativitiy and the response to his work of those around him. In both his letters and prose works we find an insightful commentator on both poetry and painting. Though never a member of any movement, he was aware of the issues that preoccupied the artistic circles of his day. His artistic independence gives both power and insight to his work.

Although his status as a household name was established through his nonsense poems and limericks, Edward Lear's talents as a painter have recently been increasingly widely recognized. The major exhibition of his work at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1985 in particular did much to enhance his reputation. Lear was a superb ornithological draughtsman - Sir David Attenborough regards him as the finest ever - and indeed early in his career earned his living from his skills in this field. The other area in which his genius shone through was that of his delicate watercolours, made on his worldwide travels and used as the basis for more "finished" watercolours and oils. In this book Vivien Noakes, an authority on Lear, has placed his painting in the context of his unconventional life. She also examines each colour plate and evaluates what Lear was trying to do in the painting and how well he succeeded.
