These proceedings contain, refereed, invited lectures and some selected papers presented at the Third Finnish-Soviet Symposium on Probability theory and Mathematical Statistics, and cover contemporary methods in a variety of topics of current interest in these fields. Of particular interest are recent results obtained by leading European researchers in the areas of queueing theory, diffusion processes and fields, controlled processes, stochastic approximations, branching processes and random graph theory - an important connection between branching processes and random trees being discovered. In addition, evolutionary stochastic systems, and some applied results from the theory of detection of changes in performance of stochastic processes are included.
