<p>Detective Superintendent Mark Pemberton is first on the scene when a young man loses control of his bright red sports car and crashes into a ditch. As Pemberton and his fellow passengers reach the wreck of the car the driver is still alive - just. As he settles into the village life of Aidensfield, North Yorkshire, Police Constable Nick Rhea begins to understand the complexities of rural law enforcement, much of with proves to be very unofficial but highly effective. We hear of his dilemmas as he is torn between his desire to prove the crippled Sidney Chapman's dog innocent of sheep-worrying, and the need to do his duty. Farmer Lowe's sheepdog presents a different problem: the overworked old dog is pretending to be deaf and Rhea finds himself drawn into the crisis; without the dog, the cows cannot be milked. Local colours and characters abound. The mixed creeds of the community provide more headaches for Rhea: for example Jame Bathurst's funeral goes quite smoothly except that the village grave-digger does not want the death-bed convert buried in Catholic ground and has omitted to dig the grave. Rivalry abounds between Anglicans, Catholics and Methodists, and Rhea has his work cut out. More problems stem from the unlawful activities of Arnold Merryweather's bus, with its massive conductress, Hannah, a jockey who steals supplies for his hungry horse and the old railway worker who vanishes as the last train passes through the village. In all, a vivid light-hearted insight into rural bobbying.

The wild and rugged North York Moors remain one of the unexploited and least explored areas of England. In the depths of winter, with dark days, villages cut off by snowdrifts and animals marooned amongst the heather, it has all the appearance of a true wilderness. For Constable Nick of Aidensfield, however, the fierce weather and wild terrain must not interfere with his police work. There is crime too - a young boy's precious bicycle is stolen, there is a cruel burglary in an elderly lady's home while a fake policeman is 'fining' people for traffic offences. Nick is also faced with identical twins who commit clever crimes; there are ominous goings-on in a remote churchyard too and Nick has to cope with a spillage of mysterious liquid which threatens the water supply. It's all part of constabulary duties for Constable Nick of Aidensfield.

Constable in the Wilderness

Having qualified for promotion, Constable Nick must await a vacancy as he continues his rural duties at Aidensfield deep within the North York Moors National Park. As the spectacular countryside becomes increasingly busy with tourists, so the constabulary's day-to-day problems multiply, but not without minor incidents like people getting lost or the menace of discarded litter. So why would a man dump financial magazines in a moorland stream or a businessman throw sackfuls of rubbish into private woodland? What were the fearsome creatures which trapped tourists in a moorland village? Why would anyone abandon a wedding cake? There is more serious work when Nick discovers the body of a man in a remote moorland house and a dog finds a human leg in a wood, the funeral of a London gangster brings a hint of menace to Ashfordly, a grandfather clock mysteriously disappears after an auction and there's a prowler at a local hospital. There is the human side of his work, too, such as discussing home security with a lady who never closes her back door and the landlord who manages to persuade a royal personage to perform the opening ceremony at his new pub. But was she really HRH The Princess Margaret? This is the latest in the collection of rustic tales which inspired the top TV drama, Heartbeat and its sister series, The Royal. <p>Heartbeat is a British police drama series set in 1960s Yorkshire and broadcast between 1992 and 2010. The main village in the show is called Aidensfield, which is actually Goathland (also the setting for Hogsmead station in the first Harry Potter movie). This book is a wonderful "travel guide" for the Yorkshire area and its moors, hillsides, dales, and seasides, and contains many photographs, histories, and bits of area trivia. The foreword is written by Nick Berry, who played P.C. Rowan in the series.</p>
